Question:
Can anyone tell me some secrets to getting all my water in?

Is it strange that everything eat or drink taste awful, except tomatoes and cucumbers and tuna (none of which are on my diiet yet)?    — neneburge (posted on August 6, 2003)

How about adding sugar free syrup to your water, making crystal light, adding lemon or limes to water.

Hi Anita! I am only able to get in a little over 32 oz. But I am also 4 weeks out. I freeze my bottled water b/c I love it ice cold. My surgeon said, drink 1/4 c. every 15 minutes. Maybe that is too tedious, but hey! It will get easier. Now I freak out if I don't have my water bottle on me. The more you drink, the more your body will demand it.

For the firsst couple of months, everything tasted bad to me. The only way I could drink water was if it was poured over ice - ice cold! All the diet drinks (diet Snapple, Crystal lite etc) tasted so nasty! Even the sugar-free popsicles that everyone suggested tasted gross! I had a real hard time in the beginning with getting my fluids in, but after a month or two things got better real quick. Now, at 4 months, I can down a full 20 oz water over the course of about half an hour while working out at the gym. Of course, it still has to be ice cold :) Barb

It will get better.....for the first few weeks after surgery water tasted awful to me.So I had a lot of sugarfree popsicles,sugarfree fudgsicles,jello,crystal light and lemon propel which is especially yummy if you put it in the freezer first for awhile.I'm 7 weeks out and water tastes great again.

unlike the other posters the only way I could stand water early out was straight from the tap and room temperature. If it was cold I gagged. If you haven't tried that you might. I also found that Propel was a nice change from plain water and wasn't sickeningly sweet like all the diet drinks out there. Good luck!

First, don't worry about your taste.... it does change a few times and (normally) it does return. And, about the water.... some like it hot, some like it cold.... I would cramp if I drank water that was cold for the first couple months. So, I drank room temperature or warm water. And, when water tasted bad to me - I drank mint (or other flavored) decaf teas, both hot and cold. Just find a noncaloric, decaf beverage that you can drink and drink it all day long until your taste starts to return. Best of luck to you.... the initial postop stage does pass soon!

Ice cold is definitely the key. I never liked ice before surgery, can't drink anything now unless it's icey cold. Good luck!! You're doing great!!

Having the same problem - I have been trying 2 things: First I have a "Hawaiian Ice Shaver" which is not the same as a snow cone machine - the texture is different and I like it much better. So I enjoy some shaved ice every day. Second, last night I had an 8-oz cup and I just kept it to my lips for a half hour while I watched TV, I just let it constantly dribble into my mouth and swallowed every minute or so. It sounds like a pain, but my little pouch complains if I take a full mouth of water at a time. (12 days postop). I especially miss cold water - that makes my pouch complain too and I am an ice-aholic!

Oh hey... Do you have a 7-11 around?? They have crystal Light slurpees... I get a 52 oz. one of those every day, and it takes a while to drink it, but dang... it is YUMMY!!! They have red raspberry, lemonlime, and occasionall an orange pineapple that are all out of this world!! Best trick I have found in 19 months out! :~)

No, it isn't strange at all that everything tastes awful. I am the same way. For water, it must be ice cold. I also add about 1/3 parts Propel to 2/3 parts ice cold water.

Contrary to most other posters, I could not take ice cold water early; it made my tummy hurt (still sometimes bothers me at nearly 5 months out). Early on what helped me was to add lime juice or lemon juice to my tap water (sometimes a bit of Splenda, too). It made the water much easier to drink. A weak caffeine-free iced tea mix also tasted pretty good.
