Question:
WHAT KIND OF FOOD SHOULD I STOCK UP ON POST-OP?

Right now, I am still pre-op, but just wondering what kinds of food should I stock up on post-op? What about those new Campbells Soup in the cup that you sip? Has anyone tried those?    — Tanya F. (posted on September 20, 2003)

I havn't tried the cups of soup, but have tried the campbells ready to serve tomato soup and LOVE it!! Also, after surgery have someone go to KFC for you and get a large mashed potatoes. I just measure some out and they are very nummy. If you like cottage cheese that is also good. Refried beans are good protein. I didn't drink much broth at all, but found the Cub brand to be the best. I also didn't have jello much at all, not a big fan of it. Apple juice seems to taste good, I dilute it though. I am 12 days post-op. I'm finding it hard to follow just the pureed though. I want other things. Good luck to your upcoming surgery!! -Angie

Don't overdo the shopping. My taste buds changed and everything was gross so it was a big waste of money. Things that I did find helpful were, water, sf popcicles, no suger added carnation instant breakfast, i had the cream of brocolli in the can but strained it to ensure that I swallowed no bits, apple juice diluted and sf yogurt. Never ate more than a couple bites of anything. Feel in love w/ water because I felt so dehydrated. KFC Mashed Potatoes are good but give them a week or so because you really don't need those carbs.

Hi, I'm 3 days post op. As the others have said, I wouldn't really advise spending a lot of money on food at this point. I say this because you don't have the capacity in your pouch to hold very much. What I would focus on is getting the protein supplement powder. I got the Carb solutions/Vanilla, at Walmart, and sugar free jello. Of course broth also. I would also get some chewable vitamins with iron, like maybe Flintstones, and tums with calcium. I hear the sugar free popsicles are good too. My physician told me to just stay on the liquids until I go back and see him. So, I will go from there. God's BLessings to you on your upcoming surgery. :) Myrna Espinoza

Stock up on NOTHING. I made that mistake. Things I loved at one week post-op, I hated at 2 weeks post-op. Things I loved at 1 month post-op make me sick to look at now. The ONLY thing I would consider stocking up on is your vitamins. That's it. It really is amazing how my tastes changed from one week to the next and one month to the next. Just some advice to save you a little money...Best of luck on getting to the other side. (by the way, I have a 6-pack of those Campbell's soup cans left from 4 months ago...I LOVED them the first month...but, well, you know...)

My physician gave me a food guide to follow. Chicken and/or Beef Broth, sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles or juice bars, and apple juice. As all the others have said, your taste buds change and these things get old fast. I couldn't stand the broth after the 1st week post-opt. I'm now 4 weeks post opt and can eat soft foods, but I am having trouble with them, so I'll have to go back to sipping soup and eating sf juice bars for awhile. I also just purchased a protein drink from GNC, which aren't that great alone, but I've read where others have blended them with fruit to help the taste. God Bless your surgery. Mary P.

Hi Tanya, One thing to put on your "do not buy list" is baby food. Many doctor's have this on their "buy" lists. The stuff is awful! Best regards,
