Question:
Is it vain for grandma to have a tummy tuck?

I turned 54 last Friday. I have a consult with a plastic surgery tomorrow, but as I think about it -- I wonder if I should go through with it, or is it all about vanity??    — ZaZa F. (posted on December 9, 2002)

I turned 56 in August and I am hoping to have a tummy tuck in January or February. I am waiting to hear from the insurance now. No, it isn't vain - in fact, there are a lot of medical problems that are made worse by the weight of the hanging skin and flab. If I can get the insurance to pay for it, I will have my thighs done also. Open RNY 11/29/01 -160 pounds

I'm 55 and closer to 56 than 55, but when I get to that point, I'll probably at least have the excess skin from my belly removed. I'm with the other poster. It's not vanity. There are a number of good medical reasons to have that done. That's why insurance will often pay for it, because it is deemed medically necessary.

i think most of us overweight people have DREAMED of a flat stomach..it isnt vain for others to have them so why should it be for us? we probly deserve them more coz we would appreciate it them more lol

Shucks grandma, I am 60 and the only reason I don't have plastic surgery is because I can't bear the pain. Vain. The word does not exist for us oldies. Go for it girl.

I am only 29, but I say if you can afford it or if you can get your insurance to pay for it, GO FOR IT! The biggest benefit of this surgery is the change in our health, but there is nothing wrong with wanting to look good while you're at it! :)

I watched a Discovery Health Channel "Medical Profile" show yesterday on a woman who had a tummy tuck. She wasn't a WLS patient, she wasn't even what I would call thin. But she had a belly that's always bothered her, made her self-conscious. Who cares what age you are! You have a right to feel good about yourself! I see many older women who are far more beautiful than women 20-30 years younger. I also joked that I was going to be one of those women who looked better at 40 than she did at 20....I'm well on my way! Tummy tuck next year, here I come! :) - Anna LAP RNY 7/3/02 -93lbs. age:38

Okay, it is somewhat about vanity, I might as well just admit it. I love what the tummy tuck did for me, it looks incredible. It changed the way I look so much. I didn't look that bad in clothes, but the difference it made is astounding. That being said, mine overlapped a couple of inches or more, it stayed rashed up and smelled funky most of the time. I really didn't realize how much I hated the panni until it was gone. No more looking at clothes and trying to figure out if they would hide my gut, I can just buy things I like. My mother (63) says she would do it in a minute if she could afford it. She is thin and attractive but after me and my five sisters, she has a belly. Anyway, I love my results!

What is wrong with vanity?? Do something good for yourself, you deserve it. Those who have had it are soooo happy they did. I plan to do so sometime next year too!

hi there! i say go for it!!!!! :) youve been come this far, feeling better, looking better! go all the way! :) i feel so good about my weightloss but cringe when i see the tummy mush. ill be needing a tt for sure and i know that if and when im able to have one, i will feel so much more better about myself and look better too! good luck to you! :)

Well I had a tummy tuck just about two months ago and it went well, I turned 60 in may . I guess some was vanity, but mostly because of the rash in the groin area from the sagging skin . How wonderful to have that all gone and a flat stomach. I do believe in miracles and I've had several
