Question:
Have you done anything contrary to what your PCP or surgeon

has suggested as a result of information you've obtained on this website? I know there are a couple of things I had done; for example using calcium citrate... what are some examples you can give where, after your independent research (not that you're trying to be a doctor), you found that you chose to go with the information here? I just wanted to know if I'm the only one that may sometimes *challenge* their healthcare provider~we have a LOT of knowledge here on this website and much of it is what we've actually gone through and not just what is told to us. Thanks.    — yourdivaness (posted on March 25, 2003)

About the only thing I've done contrary to my WLS doc's recommendations is to eat 4 or 5 times a day instead of only 3. I find the majority of post-ops saying they eat more than 3 times a day, like 2 meals and 2 snacks. This keeps me much more satisfied and prevents "grazing." I shared this with my surgeon at my most recent post-op checkup and he said it was fine and he thinks I'm doing absolutely wonderful! My opinion is, as great as our doctors (surgeon, PCP etc.) may be, in the end it is OUR BODY, OUR LIFE. Unless you're doing something you know is bad for your health (smoking, excess alcohol consumption), then be pro-active in your own healthcare! - Anna LAP RNY 7/3/02 -120lbs.

As our surgeons and doctors are learning as they go along, often times I find the best advice from long term post-ops that I know have done tons of research and take care of themselves. What I did different? Definitely the calcium citrate (my surgeon used to advise his patients to do caltrate-now I have him convinced to at least offer both options-he is still not convinced the caltrate is not working), and I moved to soft foods sooner than advised. I also did the eating 6 times a day instead of the 3 times advised by the surgeon. It worked better for me.

Yes-I don't take 30 minutes to eat my meal--I chew real well, but follow the "pouch rules for dummies" and eat at a faster rate. I found when I have that plate in front of me--it just allows more time for more food to find room to get in there--just like grazing--so no 30 minute meals for me!!!

Like Anna one thing I've found that I do is I eat five or six times a day even though my doctor wants me to eat three times a day without snacking. I don't think I get in enough calories during the day by just eating three meals a day, because my meals are generally under 300 calories for each. I don't really want to lose much more and so I get in a couple of meals (snacks) to keep my calories up.
