Question:
HOW CAN I MAKE THIS STUFF TASTE 1/2 WAY DECENT?

I AM SCHEDULED TO HAVE SURGERY (LAP RNY)THIS FRIDAY (9/15/00). I JUST BOUGHT DESIGNER VANILLIA PROTIEN POWDER... THAT SAYS IT IS THE BEST TASTING (CANT BELIEVE THAT). I ATTEMPTED TO DRINK IN WITH LEMONAID ICED TEA... GROSS. CAME TO WORK AND A COWORKER AND I ATTEMPTED TO DRINK IT WITH LOWFAT MILK (MIND YOU I AM ONLY ATTEMPTING ONE SCOOP WITH A WHOLE GLASS OF LIQUID) AND WE BOTH WERE GAGGING AND HEAVING. PLEASE PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU DO TO MAKE THIS DRINK MANAGEABLE. I CANT EVEN IMAGING HAVING TO CHOKE THIS DOWN EVERYDAY OR EVER AGAIN FOR THAT MATTER. THANKS MUCH. :) SYD    — sydnieb (posted on September 11, 2000)

I know what you mean! I thought those who claimed to like it were nuts! I did a couple of things (and still do) to make *some* protein drinks taste better...othere are just fine to me. Try adding cooled, brewed decaf coffee instead of water or milk...you can also add a scoop of instant decaf coffee...food extracts work well, too...banana, almond, coconut are amongst my favorites. I also added fresh fruit...banana and strawberry...but don't recommend doing that right after surgery...too much too soon. Hope things get better!

After many trial and errors with the protein drinks I have found one that I actually look forward to drinking. I mix the Designer French Vanilla with diet A&W Root Beer or diet Vernors. I mix it in the blender and it is like drinking a float. This is the ONLY way that I have been able to drink this stuff. And believe me, Designer is the best tasting brand that I have come across.

Mix it with Jell-o Fat Free, No Sugar Added Vanilla pudding and follow the directions on the box. You won't be able to eat all the pudding at once, of course, but it's a great way to get extra protien in during the full liquid stage and as a snack or meal when you're on regular foods. Also, you can try it with Carnation Instant Breakfast Fat Free No Sugar Added French Vanilla. I find mixing Designer Pro with sugar free chocolate flavored stuff dilutes the chocolate and makes it taste bitter. In any case, your taste will likely change after surgery and after 2 weeks of clear liquids, anything will taste good! Good Luck to you Friday and God Bless.

Designers is good but I found a drink off the internet that was better tasting and better in protein. Its called Supreme Whey Protein, www.dymatize.com. Its got 31 grams of protein. 4 Carbs, 153 calories, 25% calcium, 2% Iron Sugars 2.5gm. I have found for that because I take this as my breakfast I mix it with unsweetened pineapple juice. It sits great on my stomach and I take my dailies with it, my vitamins, prevacid, biotin/zinc (hair), vit. E (skin), and iron. I will take the extra 60 calories for the benefit of being able to have a satisfying breakfast drink. Good Luck...Trina

Yes, I tend to agree. Designer is the least popular of the brands I work with. And of those, the vanillas are the least popular. The most popular vanilla is ProBlend 55 and the most popular chocolate is ProScore 100, if you like a rich, thick chocolate shake. These will mix nicely with water or the sugar free juices and pops. Adding ice makes a slush. You want to shoot for 30g in one serving, but some will mix with as little as 4 oz of water. You might want to steer clear of milk (even skim) until you are ready to bulk up. The Extreme Pure Pro grape & tropical punch taste like Crystal Light, so they're very good, too. But they aren't chocolate! :-)

I have a great idea. Go to the grocery store and buy a big bag of frozen raspberries. They're fresh and unsweetened. When you make your shake in the blender add 15 of these raspberries. It tastes good and it masks the protein powder taste, that's what I think. I hope you find something you can stick with as these protein shakes are absolutely necessary to be healthy and keeping your hair. Great luck.

I have tried different protein drinks with hot cocoa mixes and that worked for a while. MLO is an unflavored protein that can be used in cooking, added to foods as well as a drink. I got tired of chocolate so I am now using Crystal Light Body Refreshers, Tangerine/Grapefruit flavor. I add 1 cup nonfat milk to 1 cup of the crystal light and blend with ice. It makes a fairly good fake Orange Julius.

I love DESIGNER PROTEIN/Chocolate flavor since I have experiemented with it. First, I fill half the blender with ice and 3oz of water, then, (2) packets of equal, and (2) scoops of the powder. Put on "chop" first. After the ice is chopped put blender on"mix". Yummy! A delicious chocolate shake. I have this twice a day and it gives me alot of energy. Good Luck
