Vegan alternate for Optifast
RNY on 10/02/12
Hi - for those of you *****act badly to milk or who are vegan, I provided Katie Warwick (nutritionist TWH) with the options below (links). She took a look and gave me this feedback. I think some people might get the "optitrots" because of the concentrated milk proteins. (Whey is a milk protein, as well as casein)
"You will need to adjust the number of servings you have so that you’re getting approx 900kcal/day. Looks like you would need either 3.75 servings of the “Vega" protein shake. 6.25 servings of the Vanilla flavour “complete veggie protein" or 5.25 servings of the berry flavoured “complete veggie protein". Note that the powder itself is milk protein. Doesn't matter if you mix with milk - you may still get the effects with water. Maybe not. I hope its ok for you.

Very interesting post, Heather! It had never occurred to me what someone who was vegan would do about the Optifast issue. Thanks for sharing that.

Yeah, there isn't much lactose left in it by the time it gets to the powder....mostly just the milk proteins (not the milk sugars = lactose).
