Speaking from experience - don't buy one - they become an obsession looking at a number - in the grand scheme of things you do this to become healthy not count numbers as they drop .  Weigh in occasionally at the gym , you will know when your dropping as your clothes become baggy - your waist size changes etc .  My wife , a WLS surgery vet, is now in an Eating Disorder Clinic , one of the reasons was her obsession with the scale as the number on the scale was never low enough , instead buy yourself some nice clothes , a special treat , a massage etc instead of a scale. Just my opinion anyway

This is an interesting viewpoint; one that I admit I didn't think of, and one that I think maybe I'd like to discuss.

I guess the reason I'm assuming I should have one is so I can track progress. I've never been scale obsessed in the past, so I just assume that I won't be after surgery. I suppose it's possible, but I can't really see it happening that way.

Any other viewpoints out there? I'd love to hear them!

You could track your progress in inches as a week-by-week thing and then occasionally elsewhere on the scale. Measuring tape is much cheaper than a scale.

I put my scale in the powder room downstairs and pu**** under the bathroom vanity....It is out of the way and i only pull it out once a week.  I think if i had it more visible, i would weigh myself more often.

Scale Victories are only one way to measure your accomplishments.  While some have other "toys" on it, mine just does my weight.  Some other things to judge your progress are your measurements (measure in several places, Herbal Magic measured in about 7 places, Health Tracker has a place to track that info), track how your clothes feel, and what size you are.  The best way to track your progress are through NSVs, from clothes, to being able to physical things that you weren't before.  I wasn't able to skate for very long, now I can outlast the kids.  For some it's getting rid of seatbelt extenders, or fitting into a booth at a restaurant.  Those are the ones that make the difference.  Your weight is just a number.

I'm not suggesting that you don't track weight, I'm just suggesting you use multiple methods during the process as you'll see more than just using the scale.

Good luck!

Hi, I have found that weighing in once a month with my doctor's office is the best route for me.  They keep track  of my loss and you are always using the same scale (different ones can vary).  I do this because I find that my weight fluctuates up and down with water retention and to do it more often would not be reliable.  I can go up and down as much a three lbs or so in a couple of days.  Best of luck.  In the end do what is best for you.

My vote would be to go scale and weigh in however much you want BUT measure in other ways too (as suggested) and don't ever let the number get you down
