this belly button wound isn't closing

Hi all,

I had surgery on Monday, 5/9, and for the most part, recovery has been ok, for major surgery.  The one thing that is really worrying me is that I continue to bleed from my belly button incision. I'm hoping to hear from others to get a good basis for comparison

During my surgery, they found 2 hernias (hiatal and umbilical) which they fixed;  I had  two incisions, with the big one in my belly button.  Each day in the Hospital, I bled from the incision (not a whole lot, but maybe soaking 1 gauze pad per day).  I was discharged, and the same has continued.

I am now 6 days out, still bleeding (about 1/2 gauze pad a day).  On Friday, I called my surgeons office, and they didn't sound concerned.  On Saturday, I went to my pcp for antibiotics for a lovely UTI (Thanks, Catheter!), and had him look at the wound.  He confirmed that it isn't currently infected, and yep, it's a surgery wound.

I feel like it should have stopped bleeding by now... I will note that I have two small children, and no matter how hard I try to keep still and rest, that's a challenge; I have little people crawling on me, which could be a factor. Still, they are really trying to be gentle with me, and for the most part are pretty good.  Have others had similar experiences? Advice?

please call your doctor.

I had both hiatal and umbilical but they only fixed the hiatal.
I dont think you should be oozing like that but I am not a doctor.
Please call .....   hope you get better soon.

I am no expert and I did not have complications like hiatal and umbilical hernias but I wanted to say that it took much longer for my belly button incision to heal than the other ones. and it was really itchy too. good luck and if it doesn't get better soon go to your doctor again.

Yea, I had the same problem with my belly button incision.  Dont freak out when you get tot he stage where it finally starts to scab and it leaves a goo on the gauze that resembles pus.  Think about a time you scraped your elbow and went swimming, then the scab got all greenish/yellow.....this is what happens.  If its actual pus, it will stink VERY badly.  At my 3 week follow up My surgeon treated it with some kind of Styptic powder that "burns" it closed...completely painless.
