Travel post-op?
VSG on 06/11/12
I was just wondering if anyone had suggestions for how long one should wait before traveling (by long car ride or train) after having surgery. My mom was talking to me last night about how she hoped I'd come visit this summer, which is likely when I'd try to have surgery since I'm a teacher. (I haven't told anyone yet that I'm even thinking about this, so she was unaware of any potential conflict when she mentioned it.) Upside, my mom would keep the boys busy if I needed to rest! But the thought of being 1000 miles from the surgeon in the event that there are complications makes me nervous.
I am traveling next week across the country for work and it will be week 5. I could have traveled this week and last (week 3 & 4). I don't know what the doctor's office would have said. I have been blessed with no complications and with no problems eating. I am having some trouble getting liquids in but I am working on it. I hope this helps!
I travelled from Tijuana MX where I had my surgery, all the way back to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada on the 4th day post surgery. I wore my compression stockings, and all was good. We started travelling by van at 8:00am, we had 2 long flights, and I finally got home at 11:30pm. I was comfortable the whole way.
If you can wait a month that would be great. An overwhelming majority of complications occur in the first month.
On the other hand, folks who have surgery far away from home travel within the first week.
