So I quit smoking in june (obviously for the surgery and hopefully for life).

I am a huge gum person since I don't have that cancer stick in my hand anymore.

It just dawned on me while smacking away today, can I chew gum directly out from surgery?

Of coarse, i'm not going to swallow it (duh!). Just chewing. Is that a problem?

Also, i'm starting to get a bit nervous. My bags are packed and protein is bought.

Big day is Friday morning! Oh boy!

My surgeon explicitly told me NO gum. It isn't even a matter of calories or sugar or anything like that. You take the risk of accidentally swallowing it, which requires emergency surgery to remove from your sleeve. If you could quit one vice, I'm sure you can find the strength to quit this one as well.

Chewing gum also encourages acid production in your stomach.

I too quit smoking for surgery, and hopefully wont pick it up again!  I had to let go of gum as well!  I'm actually doing ok without it, and my jaw really feels better (have TMJ). If i can do it, so can you!!

So no gum....EVER? That just seems a little rediculous.

What about sugar free hard candies? Ex: Crystal Light Hard Candies

I too was told no chewing gum after surgery!! I'm going on 4 mths & I still don't chew gum. I think I'm just scared to & also the acid production...you don't want the burpies all the time. It's normal to feel nervous. You'll do great!!
.
Good luck to you on Friday!!

See you on the losers bench!!

Yep, my surgeon said the same...no gum ever again.  SF hard candies are fine.  They also help if constipated.  I was also told no gummies (vitamins, etc.) as hard to process in the tummy.  I am so struggling with the Flintstones complete vitamin...horrible and I really wish I could have them gummie vitamins.  Oh well, the sacrifices are well worth it!  Good luck  you will do great!

See you on the losers bench too!

Thanks for the responses ladies!

Looks like i'll be giving the gum up.

But i'd do anything to make this journey better for me.

And thanks for the well wishes!

See you on the bench soon!

I was also told no gum because it forces air into your stomach and can cause pain.  I did (and still do) take chewable vitamins and haven't had any issues with that though.  You can do it!!  It'll all be worth it!
