Are the staples used to stitch up your stomach disolveable? I have this vision of metal staples attached to my stomach or floating around my abdomin the rest of my life...kind of creeping me out today. Does anyone know what the staples are made of?

My doctor told me they are made up of 3 different kinds of metals and all are ok to be in the body. The company he gets them from say they have never had someone be allergic to them or anything. He also told me that they will stay there forever and scar tissue will grow over them and they will stay and be fine.
I didn't really like that either but what you gonna do
Hope that helps!!

Thanks Cortneez! That does help. I know that I have never heard of anyone who got a VSG having issues with stray staples floating around their body causing problems, but you find your brain going down very odd paths when making a huge decision like this where part of your body is removed forever. Forever seems kind of scary. I'm just so glad for this forum so I can see that the issues people have with VSG is not about staples or regretting their decision. I'm happy to see it's mostly about normal healing issues and what to eat and the psychological effects of such a huge change in your life.

Yes!! Exactly! It's so much more normal than what you hear when you talk to your surgeon! And I am sure like I have heard from everyone I have talked to that none of us would ever go back!! We love our new lives!!
Take care and good luck!!

First, they are teeny, tiny little staples. Whatever you're imagining, they're much, much smaller than that. Second the metal won't set off any metal detectors or anything.
Third - your stomach will heal them into place. As the staple line heals, tissue will grow closed just as it does when you have a surface cut. So they won't come out and go floating around.
