As a general rule, your doctor want refer you to have the study done unless you have conditions that cause sleep apnea, such as obesity.  To answer your question, no I do not know of anyone who didn't need the machine when they were first sent for testing.  I have read of people who, after losing there excess weight, were retested and didn't need the machine anymore.  Hope that answers your question.

Nope--every single obese person I know who has been tested has been told that they have sleep apnea and need CPAP. Can't wait to "graduate" from mine!

I passed my sleep study test and was never prescribed a CPAP.

I already WAS a sleep apnea patient and already used a CPAP, but when I got to the sleep center I was informed that the insurance company's requirement for my preop sleep study was that -- surprise!! -- I had to do it without CPAP to see if I still had SA.  I failed miserably, got almost no sleep, and barely made it home.  Then, of course, I had to do a SECOND study with the CPAP, but that one was plagued with technical issues unrelated to me.

It's funny because I had 3 previous sleep study's. I passed every one of them. When I had my workup for surgery done, wouldn't you know I Failed!! Crazy!

Did the CPAP thing prior to surgery and don't think i need it anymore. I have to retake the test when they call me.

I had a sleep study done in 2008. Passed with flying colors. Only thing noted was how long it took me to fall asleep.

That's an interesting question and I'm glad I got to see so many answers. I didn't realize that everyone was required to do the sleep study. I had my first consultation with the doctor and she asked me if I woke up in the middle of the night unable to breathe. I said no, but she is having me do one anyway. I meet with that doctor on the 14th, who knows when they'll actually do the study. I really hope that I pass, I would like to not sleep with the machine!

I had a HOME sleep study so I can sleep in my own bed. Wasn't to uncomfortable at all. Anyway, I was told that my apnea was so mild that all I should do to improve it is lose weight and that is what I am doing now anyway.

I know that when you do a sleep study before your insurance approves you for surgery it is BETTER to have problems like having to use a machine, since that is a reason to help approve you for the surgery. Like having an underlying issue on top of your obesity.

Hugs,

Rita
