Not sure. I want to lose 100-lbs, to fit into my wedding dress. That would put me at BMI 20-21. Doable or am I being unrealistic? Not sure whichwill be best in the long run.

VSG here = 137lbs lost = doable

Weight loss surgery is usually only performed on people with a BMI of 40 or higher.  35 if you have co- morbidities like diabetes.

My vote would obviously be for VSG.  The decision I made for myself.  I also want to lose about 100 pounds total.  The reason for choosing VSG for me was because I didn't like the idea of malabsorption and what that would mean over the long term.  IF you're just getting married you may need to consider pregnancy down the road and what that looks like after WLS.  I know with VSG, since you don't have those absorption issues, it is doable.

Good Luck in your decision making!

I'm 56, too, and love my sleeve.

While it's definitely possible to get the weight off with either, please be aware that you shouldn't choose DS without careful thought and discussion with your doctor. It is a powerful surgical option with excellent results and long term stats BUT (there's always a but, isn't there?) it also means a lifetime of being uber vigilant about taking lots of supplements and keeping up on blood work. Totally doable, but a cost you need to count ahead of time.

Please read the DS forum for a bit as well as this one and ask lots of questions on both. Your life and health are more important than a dress, even your wedding dress. In sewing and carpentry there's a truism - measure twice, cut once. Make sure you have a solid picture of the life you'd be facing either way, then make the best choice for YOU.

Best of luck.

Me too!  56 and loving my sleeve.

My sister had a DS in '06.  She had ~200 to loss and did.  She also lost too much, her Doc wanted to have revision of the by-bass-back to sleeve.  She didn't understand and refused but they did dilate the sleeve which is left larger in a DS, or used to be.   The weight lost stopped but she has other issues due to the mal- absorption issues.

Even with having had the Crap band for the first 3.5 years.  Than nothing for 4.5 months and regain.  I am down almost 100 pounds.

Does your insurance cover the DS with such a low BMI?

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.
