What to say at work?
You are having surgery. That's that. They don't need to know anything beyond that if you don't want to tell them. If you really want to put them off your trail, tell them it is female surgery. People tend not to pry once you go there!

I told them I was having elective surgery and left it at that. When I got back to work, everyone wanted to know how my weight loss surgery went. I don't have any idea how they found out, but no one was unpleasant about it and that's all I really cared about.

The only people who knew about my surgery at work was the woman in the HR department (FMLA and short-term disability) and my boss. I took 6 days of vacation over the Memorial Day weekend and no one even questioned why I was gone...I was on "vacation". I came back and everyone marveled over how well-rested and healthy I looked :-)
totally just did a spit take....LMAO

I told my boss I was having surgery when I requested my week off. I debated not even telling him, but just in case I needed longer than a week off, I wanted him to be aware. I told one other coworker, the one I am closest to, the one who sits right next to me. No one else has even noticed yet that I've lost weight.
You don't have to tell anyone you don't want to tell. It's personal info and you have no obligation to tell anyone you're having surgery. If you don't want them to know what kind of surgery it is, you could always say "it's personal."
