Gaining weight on the Pre-op diet

My friend and I are doing this together and we go for our monthly required Dr.s visit around the same time. Problem is she has gained weight the last 2 months and is now worried that she might not get approved for surgery. Did anybody gain any significant weight during the pre-op stage? How much did you gain and did it affect your chances of getting approved through insurance?

It might depend on your insurance. Aetna just updated their policy in August to say that you cannot gain weight. It is best to get the detailed requirements from your insurance.

It depends on insurance.  Did you guys have to call your insurance before you started the process to find out what their requirements are?  I had to do that.  I lost very little during the last 6 months, but there was no rules for my insurance as far as not being allowed to gain, or having to lose weight.

She should call the weight loss center/doctor or whoever would know, or the insurance company and find out. The social worker at my health care system who works with all of the patients, the doctors know all the requirements of the insurance companies.  Also, mine doesn't have rules about this either, but some centers have their own rules, too.

I'm assuming she's been weighed at NUT/Dr visits, so you'd think they would have said something if there was a problem.

^^ Ditto.

My surgeon didn't have any serious rules about this. His words were, "If you could lose weight on your own, or prevent yourself from gaining weight, you wouldn't need surgery." However, I've read here that SOME surgeons will turn patients away the morning of surgery if any weight has been gained. I think it's important to call someone and express this concern.

That being said, I don't think that getting signed up for WLS is a license to binge until surgery day ;)

This is what my surgeon said, too.  And yes, binging up until surgery is a bad idea.

My daughter gained and her doctor said the same thing to.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

Not losing could mean that her surgeon refuses to do the procedure. My surgeon makes all his patients sign an agreement about how much they will lose prior to surgery. If you don't hit the goal, he delays the surgery until you do.

i think that's really unfair of the doctor.  only because in a few cases it might be a metabolic reason why someone would gain weight.  i was 199 when i decided to have surgery, then i started zoloft/seroquel for anxiety and ended up at 252.  took six months but my hunger was insatiable, i would get so doped up on the seroquel at night (to help me sleep and relax) that i would just stand at the fridge like a zombie eating without even knowing what i was doing.

That's a tough one because if it was easy we would all have done it.... sticking to your diet and not losing is no reason for a surgeon to delay surgery.  I had no requirements from my insurance,  thank God!  The doctor did require a two week preop diet which was much more reasonable to me.
