Fiber pre and post-op
I'm two weeks out from starting my two week pre-op diet. I couldn't help but notice that the things on the diet plan have virtually no fiber. Did you add fiber to your protein shakes or other foods? My system tends to get very wonky without enough fiber but I don't remember my nutritionist talking about this at all.
Thanks!
I didn't worry too much about fiber when I was on liquids. After moving to purees I added a teaspoon or two of sugar free fiber powder to shakes and yogurt, and tried to eat something with fiber at every meal. I track my fiber on MFP and pretty much alway**** my daily goal of 11 grams -- sounds low but the daily recommendation is 14 grams of fiber per 1000 calories eaten per day, so that is about right for me.
A lot of the protein powders have a gram or two of fiber in them. Edamame, lentils, and beans are good sources of both protein and fiber. I also get a gram here and there from small servings of veggies and fruits. PB2 has some fiber, and of course nuts and nut butters do as well (I am very cautious with those as they tend to be trigger foods for me and so high-calorie). Oh and Chobani Simply 100 Greek yogurt is great - high protein, low carb (for yogurt anyway), all natural and 5 grams of fiber per serving! It all adds up and I hit my target at the end of the day.
I add two tablespoons of benefiber to my daily shake. It works very well for me and keeps my system happy.

I've been adding a Tablespoon of Benefiber to my shake in the morning, too. The instructions on the jar say to add 2 teaspoons to something three times a day (i.e. your 2T/day), and I'm wondering if there is any reason it would be better to stretch out the dose over the course of the day as suggested, or take the 2T in the morning as you are doing (and as I'd like to do). What do you think? I am definitely having constipation issues, although not dramatic ones, so I'm really just wondering if I should increase my 1T to 2T in my morning shake, and if that will help or be a problem for some reason.
I do tend to drink my shake in two parts, but both within the first 3-4 hours of the day. (It depends on my exercise schedule when I drink it!) So far the benefiber is working well for me, but I use it to prevent diarrhea/loose stools. I actually reduced down to 1.5T today to see what would happen.
For constipation, I added Miralax to my shakes.

My diet has been very low in fiber, and I have gone from being a pretty regular girl before surgery to being lucky to move my bowels once a week. I tried adding fiber a la Benefiber, but it increased my carbs a lot with no noticeable pay off. I was trying pretty desperately to avoid using laxatives, but they make fiber bulking laxatives (tablets) that don't indicate a carb or calorie count on the package. I'm sure they have carbs because it's fiber, but I think I may try that or Colace, and if that doesn't do the trick, I might try Miralax.
I finally found Citrucel. It takes good care of the fiber issue and does not cause gas. Benefiber does and so does everything else I have tried.
Tablets may not work. I have seen them come out pretty much the same as they went in. I guess my pouch can't break them up.
