Vitamins giving me Heartburn?

Admittedly I have been bad about my vitamins - lots of forgotten days or only getting in the Multi and D right before bed...So in an effort to get them all in every day - I have started taking them to work and leaving them out on my computer where I can see them.  I take a few every few hours between my meals.

I have been off my PPI since 2m post op and haven't had issues with heartburn until this week (at least I think it is heartburn...maybe just upset stomach) - the week I started taking my vitamins throughout the day.  I feel churny and a little burny about an hour after taking the pills.

weird coincidence or cause & effect?

I don't want to go back on a PPI if I don't need it other than for stomaching vitamins, but I need to get my vitamins in.

Which vitamins are the worst for causing upset stomach?  I already take my multi and iron right after lunch so there is a food buffer.

I am taking: chewable multi, 4000 of D, calcium citrate pill I can barely get down, B-complex, biotin, iron, B6, and B12 weekly.

How do you get your vitamins in w/o getting a stomach ache/heartburn feeling?

Most vitamins really are meant to be taken with food.  For me, if I take them without immediately eating something I get very nauseous and my tummy gets upset.   The way I handle it is I take them with some water just a few minutes before eating a snack or meal.  That way I get some food in there and don't get the nasty, burn-y feeling.

Like Tracy said, take your vites with food. Also, I have found quality counts. Some  vitamins use binders and fillers that bother my stomach. I cannot take Kirkland Calcium Citrate. I wish I could because they are so economical, but each time I take them I get absolutely nauseous. Calcium can be particularly hard to take for VSG patients. You may want to experiment with different brands of calcium to see which works best for you. Early out I used Bariatric Advantage chewables (cinnamon flavor) and that worked very well for me.

Good luck. You really do need to take your vites, so keep plugging away at it.

I crush my multi and caltrate and mix it with yogurt twice a day.  I add a little artificial sweetener, and its a nice treat in the morning and evenings.  I wonder if mixing it with yogurt would help?

best wishes,

Carol

Thanks for the tips!  struggling with how to take with food if I need water to swallow them and shouldn't drink 30 minutes before/after eating...but maybe a few sips won't cause the food to flush out too fast.

I will try Cappy's yogurt trick too.

Thanks!

I don't buy the "don't drink before eating" thing based on how the pyloric valve works (and I confirmed this with my NUT a few weeks ago).  So I take my pills immediately before eating with a few small sips of water.
