How much pain with the sleeve
Hi, Just wondering how much pain to expect with the sleeve and how long was your off work before going back? Thank you
I was off exactly three weeks. I was still weak but going back to work helped me regain my strength. Pain....well frankly I do not handle pain very well. The first thing I noticed upon waking up was a burning pain in the center of my chest that felt like fire. I kept telling them I was having chest pain so they did an EKG and it was normal. The PCA controlled most of the operative pain but it didn't kick the burning pain in my chest. However, because of the PCA I was able to sleep through it for periods of time. Finally on the day after surgery I told an intern that I thought it was probably stomach acid....he ordered nexium and that took care of it. Surgical pain wasn't bad while resting but when you move there is incisional pain from pulling at the suture sites. I also would have this occasional cramping pain that I can only envision as my small stomach twisting slightly after being cut around on. That would cause nausea...I was so afraid to throw up so I would spit the saliva into a Kleenex and this kept me from throwing up along with the IV pain meds. I went home on oral pain meds and anti-nausea pills. I took both for about a week then was able to taper off and start walking outside. I just walked through the house and up and down the stairs prior to that for fear of getting away from the house and having a problem. Every week you feel noticeably stronger.
It was very manageable and I was back in work exactly 2 weeks after surgery. I avoided lifting though (my students were happy to retrieve items for the time needed.) Pain wise I stopped the morphine in the hospital as soon as I came around enough to tell them. I used a few doses of Loritab over the first few days at home. I went home a day after surgery.

I never had any pain, per se, just a general soreness. I had surgery on a Tuesday, teleworked the following Monday and was back to work in person the next day. I could have gone back on Monday but my surgeon said no driving for a week.
