Reflux
Had my first experience, I think, and do NOT want to repeat it. I'm not sure because I've never had it. Basically, I was awoken from a sound sleep thinking I was choking on vomit. My throat and lungs burned so badly I had a hard time catching my breath. I tried drinking water, burned like a son of a ***** Then tried milk. Just couldn't swallow. Ate 2 tums and sucked on a cough drop for the numbing affect on my throat and after about 15 minutes I was able to go back to sleep. Did not eat anything weird and had not eaten before bed. Sound like reflux?
Definitely sounds like reflux to me. If it continues, I would talk to your surgeon. I only experienced that once or twice in the 4 months since surgery. Hopefully yours won't keep recurring!

Yup, reflux :/
If it were me, I'd wait and see if it happens again, and if it does, start taking a PPI like prilosec before bed if you don't take one already (if you do take one in the morning, just move it to the pm, instead--it's easier to avoid reflux during the day, since you're upright most of the time).
It's important to get on top of reflux because it can get out of control, fast. I didn't recognize it for what it was, and eventually had to go to taking 80mg of protonix a day, half in the am, half in the pm--four times the regular dosage. I'm down to 40mg in the am, now, as things have started to stabilize, and I'm hoping to eventually quite the PPI altogether.
HUGS for the pain. I know how bad it feels, and I hated having my sleep interrupted. Feel better soon!
Oh yeah - that's definitely reflux. Ugh, nothing like waking up in the middle of the night choking on your stomach contents. And the acid really burns! So sorry you had to deal with this.
You might want to try a couple Tums right before bed as a little prevention. Also look at what you had for dinner last night and see if there was something more acidic in your food that may have triggered this. Sometimes there's just no real reason for it.
