No period yet...

My surgery was on 5/23/16 and I had my period. I was suppose to start a new pack of birth control pills the Sunday before, but didn't. I figure since sex was not allowed for 3 weeks I would take a month off and start after my next period starts. Well my period was due last week and nothing. Is this normal? Has anyone had this happen? Should I go see my GYN?

A couple of possibilities here:

We get a pretty hefty hormone dump soon after surgery. Estrogen is stored in fat cells, and when we lose a lot of weight rapidly, it goes flooding into our system. That can really screw with your cycle. (I had an IUD with no period for years, but had a looooong one post op!)

Starting or changing BC can screw with things as well. When you switch methods or pills, your cycles are often funky for a month or two. Skipping pills could have done the same thing.

The other possibility is that you're pregnant. Since you're a week late, a pregnancy test would be accurate at this point.

If you're worried, a call to your gyno couldn't hurt. I'd suspect that it's hormonal weirdness, though.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I am definitely not pregnant,  my Dr had a pregnancy test done on me as part of pre op and again morning of surgery. Have not had sex since because my Dr said wait 3 weeks after surgery. I hope that it's the hormonal weirdness.

Yup, that should be the case then. If memory serves, it took about two months for my cycles to get anywhere near normal again, and that was without adjusting my BC at all. I think plenty of other women here report similar, so your situation doesn't sound too unusual :)

Julie,

Do you mind telling me which IUD you have?  I have the Mirena and haven't had a period since 2001. If it's a possibility that I might have a period, then I need to get some supplies on hand. I'm 2.5 weeks post-op, when might I expect a period?

TIA!

Naomi

I had a mirena as well, I think I started spotting maybe 3 or 4 weeks after surgery. Not enough for heavy pads, if memory serves I got by just fine with liners.

Thanks so much for the issue, Julie. Forewarned is forearmed, lol!

I no way unusual after surgery, when you are not taking in as many calories and last but not least when you take a break from your pills. Don't worry just be sure to use other protection when you start have sex again.
