Gall stone prevention

So I had my surgery a few weeks ago and of course I've been reading up on things that can happen in the weeks/months to follow. I've read that gall stones are common and the gall bladder is usually removed after months. I would hate to have to have another surgery. Are there any preventative methods for this or natural medicines or herbs? It seems like losing weight at a slow rate at this point just isn't possible. Thanks!

My nurses had a prescription ready for me before I even made it to the operating table. I'm supposed to take it twice a day to help prevent gallstones. I'm surprised yours didn't give you anything.

Well I had my surgery in Mexico so I'm not sure if that had something to do with not getting one, but maybe I can ask.

you won't get a prescription from your surgeon cause you can't get it filled in the US.

It is really an if you do ,u do, situation. There have been ppl taking the preventative and still have to have theirs out.

My surgeon said you get them or not.  The medications helps but he couldn't say how much.  Calcium carbonate does contribute to stones.  That is why we like to take calcium citrate.  I do take Tums and that carbonate.

actually, we take calcium citrate because it is better absorbed, the carbonate is not as well absorbed and is why it can cause stones.

Thank you.  Correct.  It is just a secondary reason to take it.

Like the other user, I got a prescription for gall stone preventative. I didnt start until about a month post op. Maybe call your primary care doctor and let him know you may be interested in them? With my insurance its only $10/month. My script is for 6 months. Just got my refill yesterday! :D

I didn't receive any sort of preventative medicine for gallstones and (knock on wood) I haven't had an issue yet (13 months out). I am trying to be realistic, though, in knowing that I may have an issue in the future. One thought of relief would be that getting any sort of surgery as a fitter, smaller person, is much better than having it done at 300+ lbs. so complications would be decreased if it has to happen.
