Shrimp...

I've seen a lot of people here saying they had trouble with shrimp after surgery, so I was afraid I might as well and have put off trying it. I was never a big seafood eater prior to surgery. I mean I like most any seafood but mollusks--oysters, mussels, clams--cannot abide them, but due to the prices I generally avoided it. Since surgery, naturally fish has been one of my go-to proteins. Last night I had my first shrimp since surgery at a new Mexican place in my town, and it was great! I had no problems and it went down fine, just remembered to chew! Wrapped in bacon, grilled, and topped with grated white cheese. Dios mio, estaba delicioso!!

Anyway, I was so happy to find another food that works that I just had to share!

Great!!! I love shrimp. When I still had my band, I often (not always) had trouble with chicken and eggs (but only scrambled eggs - how strange is that????). I still sometimes have problems with scrambled eggs, but nothing else - at least nothing else that I would normally eat.

Glad you found a new source of protein! I love my beef jerky and I always make a fresh batch on Monday or Tuesday and it takes me through the week. It's my go-to snack when I want something chewy and spicy.

I have no problems with eggs, thank goodness! However, I've found just recently that I cannot be trusted with beef jerky! If it's in the house, I eat too much every time. It's the first thing I've run across since surgery that I've eaten too much of each time I bought it (at least if I ate too much of something it was protein lol). I go over my calorie goals each time. So, I've decided it goes on the back burner until I'm in maintenance and have more calories to play with. Until then, I'll leave the jerky to you!!

I make my own so I know there's no sugar or other contraband in it.....slice the meat really thin, sprinkle with Montreal Steak seasoning and pop it in my NuWave oven.....no muss, no fuss and it's all protein. Sometimes I'll have several pieces for lunch along with sliced cucumbers, red pepper or celery (for the crunch factor).

I have been pondering getting a dehydrator for some time now. I started thinking how great zucchini chips would be for some nice crunch before surgery for my diabetes. No diabetes worries now (YAY!), but I think I might get one for jerky and also for things like zucchini chips, etc. Gonna give it some serious thought now, thanks!

my boyfriend bought the NuWave for me and I have to tell you that I love it!!! I cook just about everything in there. I live alone, so it's very convenient to cook small dinner sized portions and of course the dehydrating option.....I set the temp at 175 and turn it on for two hours.....done. I also spray the racks with Pam first, so clean up is a breeze. The oven is cheap enough and if you can get one of those tv specials, you might even get two units.....that's what we did.....so he now has one in his apartment and I have one here.....when he retires, he'll move here so one of those will go to the summer house.

That is great, Cathy!! I'm not much of a seafood eater....the occasional salmon, small amount of lobster or king crab...that's the extent of it (oops, let's not forget tuna.....but who doesn't like tuna?) . I envy people who like all kinds as it is so good for you and a nice change from meat.

Totally agree, P! (P.S. My dad hated tuna, but being the great dad he was, ate it without complaint to set a good example. Result: all of his kids love tuna!)

The only things I've ever had problems eating are as follows:

Salmon - the first time Art grilled salmon post-op, he overcooked it. So specifically dry salmon. It was bad. In his defense, he doesn't eat fish himself which means I don't ask him to grill it often, so I forgave him. He's a lot better at grilling salmon now! Dry salmon = bad.

Chicken breast - specifically whole chicken breasts. If it's cut up and cooked in a sauce? No problems. But chicken breast that is cooked whole just can be very dense. It's not even an overcooking issue. Even cutting it up and cooking it as kabobs or something is fine, but something about whole cooked chicken breast's texture does not sit comfortably in my tummy. Thankfully it's easy enough to cook a package of boneless skinless thighs if I'm cooking breasts. (Sadly, Lance and I LOVE chicken thighs and Art prefers breasts. So I tend toward recipes that are conducive to making some of each.)

FALAFAL - granted I've only tried it 2-3 times, and falafel can vary greatly in quality/texture/density, but all the falafel I've had just sits in my stomach like a brick. Which sucks, since I love it.

So... yeah. Everyone is different :) And I'm with you on the "most any seafood but mollusks." I hated shrimp as a child due to an unfortunate incident over overdose on ****tail shrimp at a buffet, but I tried it again about 10 years ago and yum. It's not something I really cook due to Art's hatred of seafood and Lance preferring fish to shrimp, but I'm happy to eat them in a restaurant!

Shrimp was one of the first solid proteins I tried (I tried the super small salad style ones that are really tender). I'm 9 weeks out and I have eaten all kinds of shrimp now! I'm glad I didn't hear about potential issues and wait!
