I volunteer! I've made a bunch of friends through my volunteer work and got some amazing pay back.

Even if you aren't religious you can volunteer through churches. Schools need people to read to students, especially as more and more money is being alloted to other programs. There are just so many opportunities out there.

I find that making friends with other volunteers makes me want to be a better person myself.
