As long as it is a combined pill (oestrogen and progesterone) and not progesterone only or a mini pill, you should be ok. In the first two years post RNY I would consider using condoms as a back up plan.

I was on the pill for 7 years post RNY and had a Mirena fitted last year - can't recommend it highly enough!

I don't think anyone has a definite answer to this question. My surgeon strongly recommended using two forms of birth control for at least two years post-op, and even longer unless you want to get pregnant.

My surgeon STRESSES two forms of birth control for at least the first 18 months post op.  Traditional birth control pills are likely not to be abosrbed correctly.  Those women who failed to "remember this advice" had a tendency to end up pregnant a few months post op, right in the middle of their wt loss journey.  Don't rely on the pill alone.  after i had my son i was on the mirena ( but it fell out 2 weeks later) so then i went to the pill and i could never remember to take it so i switch to the shot (but i stop that as soon as i was looking into getting this surgery cuz the shot already makes you have to take a calcium supplement and i didn't need to add more vitamins to my list) .. so then i did the nuvaring for about 2 months and now i have the implanon (it is implanted into your arm) and it last 3 years and i don't need a vitamin to go with it and i don't have to worry about it falling out .. I LOVE THE IMPLANON

Mirena IUD here. Had it for 18 months now with no baby. I have a cousin who has 2 babies and she was "on" the nuva ring both times. My surgeon gave me 2 choices, IUD and condoms or NO sex. I chose the IUD plus condoms.
