Daily Calorie Intake
DSers require high protein and high fat, with low simple carbs. The high protein/fat has a large concentration of calories. I eat a lot of cheese and red meat (including bacon) daily and my cholesterol was 120 last I checked.

.....3000+ ..???? What diet is this?
_____________
That's the beauty of it---it's not really a 'diet' at all. DSers don't count calories---we count grams of protein, and everything else pretty much takes care of itself. We do eat protein and fats FIRST, and then complex carbs, lastly simple carbs. If we're eating as much protein and fat as we NEED, then we don't really have room for many carbs.
- These are the rules I followed/follow:
- *Drink 64 ounces Liquids daily (drink up to a meal, wait 60 minutes after a meal) (I add 2 packets sugar free drink mix and 1 teaspoon Benefiber to 2-32 ounce water containers)
- *Must eat at least 60 grams of Protein a day (80 or more grams beginning at 1200 calories a day)
- *Eat dairy products that are no fat/low fat
- *Eat simple (dairy, fruit) and complex (beans, vegetables, whole grains) Carbohydrates (I do not count daily grams)
- *No more than 15 grams of Sugar per meal (more grams if able to tolerate-I allow myself up to 30 grams Sugar per meal from Simple and Complex Carbohydrate sources and also from Dairy products that are no fat/low fat because I do not seem to dump on Sugar)
- *Eat 3 main meals (B, L, D) no further than 5-6 hours apart
- *Eat 1 protein snack at 1200 calories a day at least 2-3 hours from breakfast
- *Eat 4-5 protein snacks at Maintenance calories a day at least 2-3 hours from B, L, D
- *3-6 Months After Surgery: I ate 600-700 calories a day
- *6-9 Months After Surgery: I ate 800-900 calories a day
- *9-12 Months After Surgery: I ate 1000 calories a day
- *12-24 Months After Surgery: eat 1200 calories a day (I ate 1200 calories a day until 15 months when I reached my goal weight)
- *24 Months after surgery (or when goal weight is reached before 24 months): Maintenance calories (BMR/RMR & Activity Level) (Malabsorption of calories lasts approximately 18-24 months) (I eat 1800-2000 calories a day to maintain my weight loss of 200 pounds at a weight of 131 pounds. My height is 5'4")
- * I do not participate in a formal exercise program due to Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis. I do move around a lot more and do a lot more walking.

Most RNY people seem to eat 1200-1600 calories a day to maintain, so I would recommend less than that if you are in the losing phase.
Trial and error is how I determined how many calories I need. The further you get out, the more you are capable of eating.

Daily calories don't matter as much for the DS. Since we focus on protein then fats and lastly, carbs...what may be low in calories may be high on our list of what NOT to eat.
Fat is the main issue for most surguries...a DS'er ONLY absorbs about 20% of the fat we eat...so while a normal person needs about 30 grams a day to stay healthy, we need about 150 grams to absorb the same amount. The math is here: http://www.dsfacts.com/ds-math.html
Fat: 1 gram = 9 calories
Protein: 1 gram = 4 calories
Carbohydrates: 1 gram = 4 calories
30 grams of fat equals 270 calories 150 grams of fat is 1350 calories but a DS'er only absorbs the 270...That is partly why we actually eat, by normal standards, about 3000 calories a day but only absorb about 1200 of that. We absorb about 60% of our protein, about 60% of complex carbs like green veggies, and 100% of sugar/simple carbs...it's why we gain weight with carbs.
Bottom line, for a DS'er, a calories is not a calorie is not a calorie!
