What Gets You Through...

I am looking for ideas on what got you through, in terms of food, right after surgery, a couple of weeks after surgery and months after surgery.  Okay, GO...

This depends on a) your surgery type  b) your own doctor's orders!  Different surgery have different requirements and, oddly, different doctors give different plans

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

Don't make too big a deal about your first month or two after surgery. It will fly by, and then you have the rest of your life to deal with. People tend to obsess too much over the first couple of months.

I had a lot of protein shakes, cheese and beans at first. Deli meat was great as soon as I was able. It's moist and easy to chew. After that it was regular food, just small quantities. Bread was really hard for a very long time. I still have not had things like pasta or pizza at all.

6'3" tall, male.

Highest weight was 475. RNY on 08/21/12. Current weight: 198.

M1 -24; M2 -21; M3 -19; M4 -21; M5 -13; M6 -21; M7 -10; M8 -16; M9 -10; M10 -8; M11 -6; M12 -5.

Why? What made you choose the RNY over the Sleeve or the DS?

For me, my surgeon's plan was that I could start soft foods at three weeks out. At that point and since then, cottage cheese has been my go-to. It's quick and easy, for one thing. You can eat it plain, flavor it with sugar-free syrups or small amounts of sugar-free preserves, mix in some protein powder and/or fiber, make it savory with a bit of spaghetti sauce, etc. It's versatile and nutritious. I'm only three months out from surgery but cottage cheese is a staple for me now.

I had very detailed instructions from my surgical center.  There were charts to fill out where I tracked my food, exercise and water.  Staying hydrated was the most important for me and I still keep water with me at all times.

If they do not have you tracking on paper, you definitely need to use myfitnesspal and keep detailed records.

Protein shakes, Greek yogurt (sweet or savory), cottage cheese, Ricotta Bake, refried beans, cold cut rollups were (and still are some days) staples early on.

Decaf tea was a fav in the morning (was not allowed coffee for a month)

Warm milk with protein (like a steamer)

You will be pleasantly surprised at all the wonderful protein packed and TASTY foods we get to eat :)
