Stupid question - can you puree food in a ninja or magic bullet or does it have to be a food processor?

You can use anything that will puree the food.  I used a mini processor that came with my ninja.  It worked well!

If you are going to buy a Nutrabullet do not waste your money on the top of the line $140 one. Buy the $89.00 from Amazon it breaks less often and does the same job.

The NutriBullet is awesome and easy clean up!  Really brings out the flavor in food!  Be extra careful with garlic!  YOWZA:-)
