Does having hypothyroidsim slow down the weight loss?

I'm just a little curious. Since the thyroid regulates your metabolism, will having an underactive one cause you to lose weight slower.

Has anyone else had issues with this?

I have hypothyroidism and I've lost weight relatively quickly...so in my experience no. Do you monitor your TSH etc? I had to up my dosage after surgery by 25 mcgs. xoxo

They just checked mine because I was so tired. It was 47 when it should be under 5. Started Synthroid 100mcgs today.

WOW, that's high. Good thing you're being treated. Mine was 36 at its worst and I was barely able to get myself in to the office. I was also on 100 mcgs of Synthroid but after surgery by TSH crept back up (probably due to malabsorption) and now I take 125 mcgs. xoxo

Yes, an under active thyroid will cause you to lose weight slowly or even not at all, but that is why you get treatment for it. Synthroid is an artificial hormone that replaces the hormone your thyroid is not producing enough of. Once you are getting enough of that hormone, the symptoms of hypothyroidism will go away. For me, I was already morbidly obese by the time I received treatment for my hypothyroidism. Then, my body refused to let go of the weight I believe because of set point weight, which is a theory that our bodies have mechanisms in place to defend weights we have been at for a long period of time. The great news is that the theory also states RNY can reset your set point weight, and so far I am losing weight just fine since my surgery.

It wouid if you didn't get treatment. But by taking medication, it should perform at the correct level and so should not slow loss.

Highest 290, Banded - 248 Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006. Regain of 28lbs 2013-14. ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

I had my thyroid removed years ago. Since my surgery last year....I have been on three different brands of thyroid medication and several different doses. i can always tell when mine is off because I am so tired and so nervous. I have to have it checked every 90 days. I feel like I am a slow loser and the Queen of stalls.....but I am still losing....if not pounds...inches.

I also have hypothyroidism and am hoping that it doesn't affect my rate of losing weight after my surgery on June 16 I take and have been taking 137 mcg of synthyroid for a very long time.
