Exercise

So next week (Monday) I'm released to normal activity. Yay! I want to start working out but I'm worried of doing too much too soon. Any suggestions on where to start? I love zumba but its an hour long class with lots of jumping/ hopping. I can avoid that and scale it down but I'm still nervous. I just don't want to do any damage. My exercise physiologist gave me some "at home" work outs but I'm so unmotivated at home so the gym is better. I can call him but I hate to bug him if I can get answers from all of you guys. Thanks in advance for your input.

I walked, plain and simple.

agood pair of shoes, a good book on my iPod and off I went.

i built my stamina by walking and then went back to the gym, mostly elliptical, spinning and body sculpt classes after that.

I got some good tennis shoes before surgery as a gift to myself for my future so now I just need a good book. Thanks for your reply.

I am starting with the bike at a very slow pace. I'm using the one with the back on it for extra support.  Good luck.

I walked a lot the first 3 months, then I did a lot of zumba at home until I started going to the gym around the 5th month. I would have gone sooner but I had to wait for my daughter to start school :) I would definetely avoid the jumps and hops in zumba until you know your knees can handle them. Getting injured is not a good idea :P Just listen to your body, if its starting to hurt slow it down.

I began by brisk walking - my neighborhood has lots of hills. I made sure to climb the hills nearly every day.  After a few weeks I started running, and walking the hills.  Around 3 months post op I joined the Y and began taking classes (Step, Zumba, boot camps, etc).  Around 6 months I could run the neighborhood, hills and all.  Just listen to your body, if you do it gradually you should be fine!  Good luck.
