Repercussions of not enough protein daily????

So....9 days post op and I'm fighting with myself to get in enough protein. I can't seem to drink/sip enough protein throughout the day. I had to buy unflavored protein to put in the other things I am allowed to have because I am already sick of the sweet stuff. I never really loved sweets to begin with so the protein shakes have taken 2 -2 1/2 hours to finish. I ate a scrambled egg last night but there's not a ton in that. So what are the repercussions for not enough daily protein? I don't have a follow up appt till Wednesday to talk to doctor about my concerns so I figured I'd see what info you guys have on it. Same goes with the water situation but I know I could become dehydrated. I feel like I need to be sipping something 24 hours a day in order to get all the fluids/proteins in me because just a few sips and my stomach starts cramping. UGH

Hi there!  I was sure I was going to get in trouble with my first post op appointment because of not enough protein.  I was able to get my fluids in, but not the protein.

The dietician, the bariatric nurse and the surgeon all said that was aok in the short term as far as protein goes.  You will definitely last until Wed!

Keep getting the water in, THAT is non-negotiable!

If you haven't looked at Eggface's website, you will definitely want to.  Lots and lots of ideas for how to get your protein in no matter what stage you are in. http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com   Going thru hating protein drinks is pretty common, we all have to figure out for ourselves what is palatable enough to get by that stage.  You will get by it, tho!

Thanks! I have taken a look at her site a few times and she does have some good ideas. One I tried tonight was refried beans with a little shredded cheddar cheese. But when I look at the protein servings on the can and what I am actually eating (maybe 3 full tablespoons) it's not a whole lot. It just worries me that I am no where near the grams a day that the doctor is wanting.

Stop worrying!  :)  Your doctor has heard it all before.   You are normal!  There ARE people that are able to get down all the recommended protein right away.  I see them posting all the time. Freaks! (I say that with love.)   But, there are also plenty of us who didn't and the path to 60g protein (my target) was more of a process.

It is true that without protein supplements, it is very hard (impossible?) to reach the recommended  protein targets in the early months.  You will just have to keep trying different things.

Some people do better with warm/hot drinks.  I'm told that Unjury's chocolate splendor makes a great warm/hot chocolate (there is a science to making a hot protein drink.)  Also, I know for sure that pre-surgery, I LOVED unjury's chicken broth.  Ungery will let you buy samples, by the way.

Best wishes.  A year from now this will barely be a memory.

It's a process. You are brand new. Just keep eating the protein first. It will take a while to get up to the MD's recommendation because you are still recovering.

I've been doing the following and it has been working for me- I'm also 6 weeks out this week.

in the morning I have a protein shake. It is between 26-30 grams of protein

then I have a yogurt or something like that (it is 12-15 grams) not sure if you can have that

what about chicken broths with unflavored powder?

or cream of wheat with protein powder?

also- i drank isopure in the beginning to get my protein in. I mixed 1/2 bottle with 1/2 water and drank that. 1/2 a bottle is 20 grams protein.

hope some of this helps. you HAVE to get the liquids in...

Yes I can have Greek yogurt they said...I'm just not a fan of it. I just purchased some unflavored protein and will try that today in my soups to see if that helps. I haven't been given the green light on cream of wheat and don't see that in my eating plan at all that the Dr's office has mapped out for me. I think because it's carbs. Thanks for the info!

Honestly, I'm glad to see a food plan without cream of wheat. We just don't need the empty carbs. It has no nutritional value on its own, and you'll be better off adding unflavored protein powder to something else like yogurt.

The Dannon Light and Fit Greek comes in really wonderful flavors that really don't even taste "yogurty". I would encourage you to try a couple of flavors. The Dannon Triple Zero has more calories, but also have a little more protein and their peach and berry flavors aren't overly sweet at all.

I woke up in between a memory and a dream...

Big fan of the triple zero! Also the light and fit is pretty good but I prefer the triple zero. (DH works at the Dannon plant actually, I was SO HAPPY when they started making the Oikos there lol!)
