What's so hard about it?

I just finished my nutritionist appointments and am waiting on insurance approval and then a surgery date.  I just wondered what has been the HARDEST part for you all to get used to in the months and years after surgery?

(I will be having RNY)

For me, I won't say that there was a "hard part" to get used to after surgery.  What has been hard is to not let myself get back into the bad habits that I had prior to surgery.   I won't lie, I started having regain two years ago and it was because I had become lax in my eating habits.   Life happened, divorce happened and death happened.   It all affected me  and now I am trying to get it back under control.   I've gone back to basics and doing what I know works, because I know my tool still works!

Good luck,

Nik

I'm happy to say that nothing has been hard in my first 4 months after RNY.  I had no pain after surgery.  The plan they gave me to follow was clear and reasonable.  I dont feel hungry.  I havent gotten sick.

I guess I miss the behavioral part of eating.  I still instinctively look to the kitchen at 9:30PM because I'm so conditioned to eat a sandwich at that time.  So thats been annoying, but I wouldnt say hard.

This is, by far, the best thing I've ever done.

Coping with head hunger.  I don't feel physically hungry, but my brain is still addicted to food.  The surgery doesn't fix the emotional/psychological issues that causes us to overeat and become obese.  If you have an eating disorder (which I do), I strongly recommend therapy with an eating disorder specialist to get the root of your issues.  If you can't afford therapy, a regular support group like OA is widely used by many people here.

At 7 months out, it is now just routine, but the new way of eating was VERY difficult to adjust to! I never get past the protein part, so pretty much all I eat is meat still. It's fine and I'm used to it now, but it took a long time to wrap my head around not having any side dishes. I know non-starchy veggies are allowed, but I never have room once I get my protein in!

Also, head hunger. I have no physical hunger anymore, and most days I have to remind myself to eat and really think about it since I don't get hungry, but boyyyyyy, when I have a craving for something specific, it KILLS ME!!!! I don't give in, but it's HORRIBLE!

This is probably the least of my difficulties, but it is noteworthy: eating around family/friends. Mom is the worst, but they don't seem to understand that just 2 little ol ounces of meat is all I need now. They want to feed me more.... "are you sure you got enough? have some of my _______." It's not tempting or anything, but it's emotionally frustrating that these people that are close to me don't get it, even after 7 months and me telling them over and over and over again.

My tailbone almost protrudes. I guess being big as I was made m tailbone have to point out to accommodate my extra butt. I've always had really thin legs anyway. So, after about 100 days, I was down 101 pounds. Most of it came off my legs and butt. I came here one day and asked because I never see anyone ask about it.

They told me that it is common, and it should bother me for about a year. It does. I can feel it laying in my bed on my back. It's weird.
