Sweet Foods

I am getting my WLS shortly and I had plenty of time to think about changes in the future.  Throughout the years I had lost/gained weight more times than I can count.  I will be getting RnY and I really hope that by sticking to new habits and being compliant that I will be successful.

Most of us got in trouble by eating larger portion and high carbs diet, etc ... - not healthy.  One thing that I find a little disturbing that I see all the time is people that are always trying to replicate sweet foods by adding some sort of artificial sweetner, sugar free syrup.  Refined sugar is a bad thing so why always try to copy the taste?  I am getting away from all of that and what sucks is that Optifast taste so sweet that it makes me almost want to gag. I get it that we have to be careful with fruits etc. but I believe natural is better than consuming all those chemical that have no nutrition at all.

I don;t necesarily disagree with you, but sometime in the first 6 weeks, you may come to a point where you realize that you have to eat something to fulfill your protein and fluid requirments (and not streth your pouch) and you may decide that protein shakes are worth it for the first few months.  Long-term, you will eat real food - and stay away from processed food, not just art. sweeteners.

At first I used the 35gm prot per 12 oz - All I had to do was drink two of those and I got all my prot and 24 oz of fluid down.  That protein and fluid is the name of the game for the first 3 months after surgery (even after that you still have to get the prot in, but you have more options as you stomach heals and it is much easier).

I totally agree with the protein/fluid part - this will be part of my life for a long time.  You seem to be doing great!  Thanks for your reply.

I think sometimes you just want something sweet. It's kind of rare for me at this stage but I'm only going into my 4th month. By year 2 or 5 or 10 I may want something sweet or artificially sweet. 

I know that it seems counterintuitive in some ways, but we have to do what is sustainable long term to maintain our losses and live.

Why not? Some people ( lots of, I'm guessing ) still like sweet foods. It doesn't mean anything negative if people want to use sugar subs. 

I am one of those that prefer to replicate the sweetness of sugar with a sugar sub. I put Splenda in my coffee, and when I bake, I use a blend of erithrytol and stevia.

 I get "dumpy" from eating sugar and fruit, and I have reactive hypoglycemia, so sugar is a no-go, but I do like sweet tasting food. I don't buy into sacrificing good taste just because I no longer use real sugar, soooo I use the subs. 

Why do I do it? Because I want to; it's pretty simple, really.

As long as I use good judgment and limit myself to small portions, I see nothing wrong with wanting something sweet made with sugar subs. 

Different strokes and all that.

We all get to "pick our poison" as the saying goes. I like sweets. Sometimes fruit fits the bill, other times I consume things with artificial sweetener, and other times I eat things with regular sugar. So far, at 8 years post-RNY, this works for me. If it does not in the future, I will re-think my strategy.

I'm sure there are things you do in your life that others disagree with, too. Live and let live.
