Topic: RE: Scared about stopping my NSAID!

Just KNOW they are very serious when they say you can not have any more NSAID pains meds.  I thought I would be ok and after a couple of years i started taking them again.  I ended up with an awful bleeding ulcer that went into a blood vessel and had to be taken in to have it repaired.  I will have to look into the Gabapentin because something has to help...

Small hand weights.  Look up some exercises online that you can do with 3-5lb hand weights.  Call your Rheumatologist.  They can suggest some sort of exercise that you can do now that won't compromise your hips, knees, feet, etc.  Once you get the new hip, and shed some more weight, you'll feel brand new and probably want to run a marathon!  Good luck!

Topic: Exercise where to start???

Hello, I am 2 weeks sleeved and have severe to moderate arthritis.

I also need a new hip which will happen in March.

Where do I start with exercise.

Walking is great but the hip does not really allow for that much.

Was thinking of some strength training maybe  once I'm approved.

Anybody, got any ideas.

I hope your surgery went well!  I was on Meloxicam, and it never worked for me!  Gabapentin (Neurontin) makes me sleepy, and I take it as needed for pain in my neck.  I was diagnosed with RA last summer, and it's pretty aggressive.  I take five pills once a week, and it seems to work wonders for me.  I was told that before I had WLS, I would have to adjust some of my meds, which is fine with me.  I'm hoping that after WLS (my journey has just begun), I won't have as much RA pain that is associated to being so much overweight.  I wouldn't be too overly worried about the NSAID restriction with the RNY.  There are many wonderful medicines that your Rheumatologist, or even your PCP can prescribe that will help with the pain.

Good luck to you!

Thank you for that post!  So glad there might be another option for arthritis pain control.  I am on one pill every three days now, weaning myself off.  i am taking pectin and grape juice which may be helping, and turmeric which also may be helping.  I am stiff all the time but losing weight should help.  Good luck to you, too!

Hi, so sorry your in pain! I'm in the same boat. I have rheumatoid arthritis, and was taking Naproxen (NSAID) for pain. I also had to stop taking it too, and was told I could no longer take it after surgery. When I had my EDG done back in April 2016. They found a ulcer in my stomach and said it was caused by Naproxen and that I had to stop taking it right away. I went to my rheumatologist and she put me on Gabapentin 300mg 2x daily which I only take once at night. It has been a miracle, but doesn't work for everyone. It is not a NSAID, BUT IN ALL HONESTY IT HAS HELP ME BETTER THAN THE NAPROXEN I WAS TAKING. I hope this helps, and best of luck on your journey!

Topic: Scared about stopping my NSAID!

I am scheduled for RNY surgery September 9, and know that I will have to stop taking Meloxicam, an NSAID  I was prescribed couple of years ago for osteoarthritis pain.  When I had to stop it for a week prior to endoscopy, I could barely walk by the time th endoscopy happened.  Now, I am realizing that I will not ever be able to take it again!  The nurse at my pre-op seminar suggested purple pectin (tablespoon of liquid pectin in Grape juice) and turmeric.  I am weaning myself off the Meloxicam now, only taking a pill every other day and planning to go to one every three days next week.  But my knees and hip are really starting to ache now.  Afraid of what will happen when I can't  take anything!  Any advice out there?

Topic: has anyone experienced this?

Here is my story.  A year ago The Hip surgeon I had, changed his mind one week before the surgery and said he would not do it. My workplace put me off on disability because of my need for the hip replacement. My job is quite active working with parents and their children.  Before I left my manager said they had no problem at all with me adapting parts of how I do my job to accommodate my arthritis and replaced.

In the conversation when they put me on disability my manager and the director of my workplace said many nice things  i.e. what a great worker I was , that they wanted me to get healthy and they wanted me back that I was perfectly suited for my job. That they would hold my job for 5 years. Now I think their assumption was that I could be on works private disability for 5 years but in actuality I can only be on it for two years. I recorded it as I was very paranoid at the time, they don't know.

Once the hip surgeons ( multiple surgeons) heard I also wanted to have WLS they refused to do the hip before the WL. WLS will be September 2, 2016 . Hip will be March 6, 2017. Back to work September 2017. Disability is over in October 2017.

In conversation, and this is the second one I've had like this ( she calls them check ins)My manager made it sound like I'll never make it back. Tonight she actually made it sound like she expected me to have given up by now and that she was surprised I hadn't.

I really believe she is working very hard while I'm gone and cannot speak for myself to paint a story of physical incompetence. I have arthritis ( moderate to severe in the knees and feet) as well but the hip is why I am off. So she brought up the arthritis as if that was the reason I was not at work. I did correct this politely.

I have met with other staff socially and have been slightly confused by their comments and questions "oh you are coming back" or " are you coming back" and more and when I say I am working very hard and hope to be back next year they look at each other like they know something I don't.

Tonight my manager talked about a friend who when he was off on disability the insurance company retrained him, and how she thought that they would do that with me. I suggested that the insurance package his company paid for was maybe slightly different and that you had to pay for extras like that. our insurance company does not do that.

I truly don't know what life will be like once I lose weight and have my hip replaced.

Has anyone been through this. Can they renege on what they have said, even when I have it recorded. Do they not have to give me time to get back on my feet. This manager has done this before with others, repeated, we all worry about her, she is the reason I recorded the conversation, she has also bullied people to the point where they leave to get away from her so it very feasible however is it legal.

Anyone know. Anyone been there.
