Impressed by my surgeon & lab order question

I just got my lab slip from Dr. Hares for my 3 month labs, and spent the better part of the afternoon learning what I could about our labs, and comparing his lab orders with our recommended labs list.

Here's the impressive part... there were only 2 tests missing! There was no hA1C ordered, but he has (rightly) turned my diabetes and its management back to my PCP. However, the other missing test did concern me some. He (or his people) didn't order the hepatic function panel. That seems so strange to me, as my liver was the whole reason I had to have my DS in 2 parts. Is this one of the labs that routinely gets missed by surgeons during follow-up care? Any other thoughts?

Did he order a complete metabolic panel? If so it will include your liver function tests.

Ah ha! That must be it. He did order a complete metabolic panel, but I thought that the liver function stuff was separate because it was listed separately on our "recommended labs" list. Thanks for the clarification

No problem, glad that nursing education could come in handy!

Good! The end of last year they had so many test missing and I was asking them to add more so he asked if he could have a copy of my list (from vets here of course) and that he would start using it for all his patients. Thank goodness. But they wanted to call in a Vit D script for me too.... of course I told them no and the nurse said that we start to absorb more overtime so I should be fine. Anyway can't win them all. This is why we need the vets and their good and timely advice!
5' 7 3/4 I claim 5'8 SW/CW/GW 267/144/160 <---Dr's goal. My goal was 165lbs. Trying to build muscle. So, unsure what weight I'll be at  once I meet my fitness goals.

Then I will bow to your self-advocacy that has benefited me and all of Dr. Hares' other patients.  Thanks for doing the hard work for us!!!

Also, I'm with you on the nurses & nuts @ the (SJWL) office. I figure I'm just lucky that I chose a surgeon that understands more than normal about our aftercare,  but I almost think Dr. Hares' has given up on educating his staff there about the DS... he laughs when I tell him things that the nurses and nuts have said that don't apply to us. Then he asks to make sure I know where to get the correct information, and we part ways laughing and smiling every time.
