Anyone have multiple issues sleeping in their bed post surgery?

I am 23 days post op today, lost 32 pounds. I haven't been able to sleep in my bed and don't know when I'll be able to. I started in the hospital right after surgery sleeping in a chair because my neck was injured while being moved from bed to gurney to bed etc. After that my belly hurt so bad that to lay down (I'm a restless sleeper) and roll over every 30-50 min was to painful. my belly still hurts but now when I lay down I have 2 issues, 1. acid reflux as bad as I've ever had it. I was diagnosed with GERD years ago but after several months of Aciphex I didn't have problems for 6-7 years, until surgery. Now I have it bad, several times a night. 2. when I lay down it feels like I have to burp, I've lost the ability to burp since my surgery so when I lay down now, there's no way to relieve that pressure and its just too painful.

So tonight I'm back in a recliner where I can put my feet up and sleep almost sitting up. My CPAP doesn't like the recliner, it leaks badly so I'm sure I'm not getting it's full benefit. I'm exhausted too. not much motivation to do anything. when I don't have to go into the office I can take 2 naps a day of about 2-3 hours each, but usually only one. I never napped prior to surgery unless I had long term issues with my CPAP.

I'm two weeks out and while I can sleep in bed- I have a hard time staying asleep. I seem to wake up at about 1:30 and stay awake for a couple of hours. It's frustrating! I don't feel that I've had a solid nights sleep since surgery. Let's hope this improves soon!

I haven't slept in a bed in years. I sleep better on a recliner Cpap and all. I actually don't use it since the surgery but the change from a bed was yrs ago. Hope it all works out for you.

Talk to the doc about the reflux.  You should have a prescription for 6 mos for Nexium or something equivalent.  If you either don't have said prescription, or what you do have just isn't working, you need to try something else.

It's pretty normal to be extremely uncomfortable post surgery for a while  I know of several who slept in a recliner for a while, post-op.  I'm a leaner/stomach sleeper, and managed to get comfortable leaning against extra pillows.

since I've lost weight alot of my aches have returned (lower back, right hip, tailbone). At home I've been sleeping on the couch (sitting up slightly) but I'm visiting my parents and have been sleeping in a bed. it's like my bones are grinding against the mattress. Very weird.

I'm only a week out, and have been on the couch since the day after surgery.  While I don' have any of the issues you mentioned, I do hope it gets better for you!!

Well Wishes to you Texasrigdriver!  Can you prop pillows around you in bed for a better night's sleep?  My bed adjusts so when I hve bad reflux I raise my head higher.

Would another option be to get your CPAP mask refitted?  Locally we have Med Supplies stores that often have sleep mask specialists & allow you to test-drive the masks @ home.  And with the weight-loss the shape of your face may have changed!  I lost in my face early...bad news is that it makes me look older :-)

Hope you get the rest you need!

Thanks Sharon. I'm starting to look my age or my dads age more and more. I never thought about the shape of my face changing. My wife says she already notices it, and to be honest, I notice it a bit too. I'll look into that.

I told MY dh that I have turned into my Mother...while that isn't such a bad thing, it has aged me in the face...all the fat made me look younger in many ways...I still didn't have jowls tho until I got to my normal BMI...

IF I could just move some of the belly fat still hanging around up into my face, it would be great!
