Wait, HOW much calcium?!

Dr. Keshishian's vitamin section says to take 500-600mg calcium 3x a day (so around 1500). Someone on the duodenal switch FB forum is going on and on about how critical it is that you HAVE to get in at least 4000 a day ("says the 2 best surgeons in the world and Livestrong website" yada yada yada)
How come I always hear the standard is 1500? Now I'm paranoid!
How much do YOU take, and what do you base it on?

I go by Vitalady and she recommends 1800 mg for DSrs as a basic. I have bone density issues so I take 3600 mg of calcium a day with extra magnesium citrate, and boron -- 6 doses of 600 mg calcium citrate in capsule form.

Dr K's recommendation is a starting point. Bloodwork will tell you if you need more.

What do I look for on my labs? How does someone know if their calcium is good because their getting enough, or it's good because it's being pulled from their bones?

I take 4,000mg a day which is 8 x 500mg and I also take magnesium in a 2:1 ratio, so that's 250mg magnesium with each calcium dose.  I have low calcium on that and a little osteopenia, so you'll have to go on your own bloodwork and dexa scan.

What am I looking for on my blood work specifically (besides calcium)?

Vitamin D within range as you need this for your bones, both low and high D can be bad.

Parathyroid hormone - if this is too high it means that you're pulling calcium from your bones as you're not absorbing enough.

You should also get a dexa scan.  People normally get them done every 1-2 years.  It's nice to get a baseline and see where you are now.

I take the standard 1500 - 2000.  3 doses of whatever calcium I'm currently taking - citrical max puts me at about 1900
but I am moving to kirkland and will then decide between 1500 and 1750.

If you already have a calcium issue maybe you would need more right away but otherwise it is like everyone else says - check your
labs before changing the dosages.

I take 2 tablets of 600mg with 1 magnesium at 500mg per dose, 4 times a day.

I take 2 tablets because 50% of malabsorbtion - so I figure I am getting around 1800mg minimum.

We don't absorb that much at a time! Why do you do that?
