Hi all,

I have my preop appt next week at TEGH.  My surgery is April 16th with Dr Cyriac.  I am making a list of things that I want to ask during my time there.   Any suggestions of what to ask at my pre op appt?  Anything you wish you would have asked and didn't?

Thanks,

Gina

Hi Gina,

I had my surgery with Dr. Cyriac on March 11th, and he is very nice - and very competent!  You are in good hands with him.  One thing I didn't think of asking was how long I'd be in the recovery room - I didn't know that if you have sleep apnea, they keep you an additional four hours there.  Another thing I didn't know was that although they started off hanging 2mg of morphine, I actually had an order for up to 4mg of morphine every 3 hours.  That was good to know.  Since you're with Dr. Cyriac, you'll probably have the same meds, so just know that if that one dose of morphine isn't enough at first - or later, you can probably have more.

The only peculiar part of my PATTS appointment was that the PATTS nurse kept absolutely insisting that I bring a huge, fluffy bath robe from home to the hospital!  I told her that I would just wear another gown on top of my first gown, but she insisted, so I brought it even though I didn't see how I could use it with an IV in one arm.  I couldn't have used it with the IV - it was difficult enough to have one arm in the second gown and hold the other side of the gown in place with my IV on (you have to keep your IV hand lower than  your heart or the IV will back up and blood will start to fill the IV line, which is something they can fix for you in a few seconds, but still, I left that damn robe in my backpack, and because I took it, I had to bring a second bag (and my CPAP), so that was a slight pain.  I could have gotten away with the one backpack had I not taken the robe.

Hi Jenn-thanks for the reply! I read your post the other day about your surgery while I was waiting for my endoscope. I loved reading about your experience as it was so detailed and positive. It really made me more relaxed as I'm the kind of person who doesn't like surprises. I like to know exactly what to expect! I will definitely not bring a robe and I am going to as how long I will be in recovery. Its nice to hear from people who had tthe same surgeon. You and Jules are the only ones that I know of who have had Dr Cyriac. He seems amazing by the way. He did my scope. Everyone seems to got through Humber. Thanks for all the good info! Hope you are feeling good and recovering well.
Take care!

Hi Gina,

Dr. Cyriac is amazing; he's both kind and competent.  He saw me before I went into the OR (I met his partner at the 'meet the surgeon' appointment at TWH), and he came to see me twice after surgery, before I was discharged.

I'm glad the account I wrote of my time in the TEGH was helpful to you.  I'm feeling almost completely normal now - I'm not taking painkillers and I just have very slight soreness now, I've had headaches far, far  worse than this!

You'll do great!

Jenn.  :)
