I have a consultation set up for tomorrow morning and am wondering how the process usually works.  I know this is the surgeon I want to use, he comes VERY highly recommended, and is in network.  So, can I just go in tomorrow, tell him what I want and provide the back up and he sends it off to insurance to see if it will get approved?

Thanks for your input!!

That is how it worked for me.  I went in to my consultation and I brought everything with me,  Medical records, perscription records, photos of the rashes taken at home, letters, etc.

My surgeon took her own photos we dicussed what would be covered and what i would expect.  her office sent off all the paperwork and received the approval letter from BCBS.  I had another consultation to look at the cosmetic part i wanted covered.  I paid my fees up front and scheduled the surgery.

That's pretty much how mine was. I went in, they looked at all the skin, pulled things here and there, took pics, and then told me what they recommended.

They also said that it was unlikely that insurance would cover it all, so we talked about what I could do to get more covered, and wound up asking the breast specialist at my gyny and my orthopedic surgeon and PT for letters of support about excess skin causing problems unrelated to rash and infection, and lo and behold, insurance covered EVERYTHING. The reconstructive guys were astonished!

So even if you think you have all the back up documentation you need, see what other medical support you can get - you never know what it'll get you!
