PCOS and WLS
How has your WLS affected your PCOS? I have read that once you loose the weight and keep it off your body "resets" its self. Can anyone give any examples? I have suffered from PCOS for what seems like forever and my husband and I would love children one day. We are looking at WLS before the new year :0)
Thanks :0)

My PCOS kicked in after my first son was born in 1999. We started trying again in 2003. In 2008 we went to a specialist who advised I lose weight, although if I opted to, he'd do IUI or IVF. I tried for about another year to lose and then looked in to wls when the PCOS prevented me from losing any more weight than I had (about 40 lbs). Since I had sugery, all of my symptoms are gone, and I'm now pregnant. My cycles are regular, the darkened skin patches are gone, skin tags are no more (I have a couple that are still there but no new ones have cropped up), no more cycstic acne, my hair stopped thinning and came back fuller after the initial loss from surgery. Good luck!
I struggled for years with my PCOS as I was diagnosed when I was 18 years old. I had RNY in Jan of 2007, so I am a 4 year post op. After surgery, my periods in fact did NOT go back to normal and my PCOS did not subside. I still sturggle with some of the side effects and regained some of my weight, but I can say that I happily delivered a 7lb 3oz baby boy on February of 2011. He is turning 3 months old today and I can hardly believe it. I never had a regular period, had my last cycle in March of 2010, tested in June because I was taking a month worth of BC pills every 3 months to allow my body a period cycle quarterly throughout the year. I took my pills and in July was due for my period, but it never came and instead on July 13 I tested and got my BFP. I have NO idea when I ovulated, but it's apparent that at some stage in the game it occured. I gave birth to Landen via c section. I had to start a round of BC pills this past Sunday because I again still haven't had a period and my doctor didn't want me to keep going without it even though I now have my tubes tied. PCOS is a major bummer and it does become controlled with weight loss surgery, but not in every case, but this doesn't in fact mean that pregnancy can NEVER happen...not sure how it all worked for me, but I can say I have a gorgeous little guy that I love to peices and God fought my PCOS battle for me in order for me to have him :) Good luck and remember ALL things are possible :)
I had PCOS as well. Husband and I tried and tried to concieve before WLS to have a baby with no luck. Plain out got told, no period, no baby. Even with metformin helping me, there was no chance. I had every symptom from PCOS you can imagine. A little over a month after WLS, I began to get my periods. Every month, same 29 day cycle. It really was like I was *reset*. 8.5 months after surgery, I was pregnant :) Hope all the best for you 2!
well..the effects of the PCOS for me wa the total imbalance in hormones, hairiness and missed and irreguar periods and insulin resistance...I tried to get pregnant for 3 years..the last year and a half of that. My endo had started me on metformin to try to help and then the reproductive endo for fertility took over from there. I used the clomid..nothing, then the trigger shots with IUI's after a year and 4 IUI's I got pregnant. I ended up with diabetes while adn then after the pregnancy and continued on the metformim. I had the RNY nov 08 and lost 160lbs. I continue on my metiformin and have to say I am still hairy but my periods regulated. THEN...last July I got pregnant. OUT OF THE BLUE!!! So I guess what I am trying to say that I guess my PCOS is still there with some aspects but the period thing and ovulation retyrned to normal!! Just to mention, my husband had hodgkins cancer several years ago and was told me would never have children...with the IUI's he had to "provide" a sperm ample prior..then this time it was all on our own!!
I too had the classic PCOS prior to WLS. My understanding is that you will always have it but the affects are diminished with weightloss. I went through IVF for my son Austin and now 18+ months out from RNY am currently pregnant.
My cycles are NOT the 28 day type they still are closer to 34 days but so much better than once or twice a year.
So overall MUCH better now.
