Someone asked about how possible it is to go from a BMI over 50 to a "normal" BMI (under 25) with a RNY.  SO... for those of you who started at a BMI of over 50, and are done losing, what was your starting BMI and where did you end up?

I started at a BMI of 57 and my weight bounces around in a 4 pound range that straddles the "normal" and "overweight" line of a BMI of 25.

She wasn't asking HOW it is possible, but how LIKELY is it to go from SMO to "normal".  (She's close to 400 pounds and her PCP discouraged her from having WLS because he doesn't believe that most people who have been SMO for a long time can get anywhere close to a "normal"  BMI let alone maintain it.  So that got me wondering...

I hate 'em, too.

I didn't think you were..that the person who asked you was trying to start one I'm glad to hear that she asked an RNY patient instead of just taking her dr's word for it.

Be happy.

Sounds like time to get a new PCP. Even if she "only" ends up in the overweight category, her health and quality of life are likely to improve significantly. I started at a BMI of 50.8. 8 months after surgery my BMI is 30, so I am still technically obese. But my health and life have changed significantly in that time and even if I never even got to overweight, it would be a success. I would encourage her to talk to a PCP who is not predisposed against WLS.
