RNY vs Band...with Type 2 DM
Did your surgeon suggest you gain weight in order to qualify? It seems that if the surgeon has a medical opinion that RNY would be better, they could write an appeal for an exception to the limit? I guess it would depend on how much weight you have to lose, and whether you can follow the strict guidelines for post-ops. There are many successful banded patients.
I think I would have another conversation with the surgeon before you gain 10 pounds. It could be that if you did that, you still might not get insurance coverage for the bypass.
good luck.

The surgeon said that if I was 10lbs heavier, she would try to talk me out of the band...But she didn't want to tell me to go out and gain 10lbs, and risk making my blood pressure and DM worse. I need to lose about 80lbs at my current weight. The insurance will cover the Band now, and the sleeve or RNY if I were heavier.
Why is the BMI different for the two surgeries? Usually it is the same?
Personally, if it's an insurance issue, I would appeal to try to get them to cover RNY. It is much more likely to help your diabetes, plus the band has so many problems. You could not pay me to get a band, seriously.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
Sincce you have GERD, even though they are going to repair your hiatal hernia, I'd say that this makes the band just NOT a good choice for you either. you need the RNY to help you with several of those issues! It'll help better with GERD and with diabetes than the band will.
