Diagnosis For My Elevated Liver Enzymes

I have been struggling with elevated liver enzymes since August 2011.

I thought it might have been some sort of side effect fron RNY almost 2 years ago.

Well, today I found out it is not. I did find out I have Autoimmune Hepatitis. Apparently my immune system is attacking my liver. I am scheduled for a liver biopsy next week to determine the damage and course of treatment. The doctor said usually this diagnosis requires 6 months or more of Prednisone which I do not want to take because of the side effect of weight gain. He said I may be a candidate for another form of treatment with a drug (I think is Imuran) and it does not cause weight gain.

I already have Rheumatoid Arthritis diagnosed 4 years ago and Hypothyroidism diagnosed 6 months ago.

I guess my immune system does not like me!...LOL.

If anyone knows of someone with this or about this please let me know of your experience. Thanks!

I don't have any experience or knowlegde of this to offer, just wanted to say sorry you are going through all this. At least now you have a diagnosis and they can start getting the problem fixed. RA can be rough on its own, and now you have this too. Hang in there and let us know how you are doing. Wishing you all the best!

I am so sorry to hear of your liver and other health issues!  Kudos to you for your amazing weight loss and being so good about taking care of yourself.  I sure hope the medication you are choosing works well.  I can totally understand wanting to stay away from prednisone.  Please take care and let us know how you are.  Really, really hoping you are ok!

Sorry to hear you are having some problems.

I have struggled with elevated liver enzymes for at least the past 12 months (at least that is the first time the problem was detected).  However, I still do not have a diagnosis and am becoming more and more concerned about it.

How high were yor enzymes?  Did you have to see a gastro for ultimate diagnosis?  Other than the elevated enzymes, did you have any other symptoms?

Please let us know the results of the biopsy.  I know someone who had that procedure.  It's not a bad one.

My enzymes are at 156 and should be at 20. I am seeing a Hepatologist. I did not have any symptoms that I was aware of. I've gone 4 years without having any problems with my liver (I have blood tests done every 2 months because I was taking Methotrexate for RA). My enzymes became elevated out of the blue and I read this is how this illness progresses. I have been very fatigued but I thought it was my Rheumatoid Arthritis and Hypothyroidism. Now I guess this is also a cause as well. Ah, the joys of growing older...

I went to my gastro doctor when my liver enzymes were elevated - they actually keep going up and down, really strange but he told me that as long as they are below 100, he isnt' concerned.

How high are yours?  If yours are elevated for over a year and you are done losing weight (rapid weight loss will increase them but once you stablize they should go back to normal) then you should get checked out.  They can check you for various types of hepatitis and other autoimmune disorders involving the liver - I think AMA is one of the blood tests or ASMA, not sure which one or both.

Do you take a PPI, statin for cholesterol, take more than 2000mg of tylenol products daily, drink alcohol?  Any or all of these can affect your liver and if you do more than one, it increases your chances even more. If not, you really need to get checked out if the enzymes are over 100
