I'm very worried because right now I gulp my drinks down, its become such a habit that when I try to sip I can't. Well I can, it's just very unnatural for me. The only time I sip is when I'm drinking a really hot liquid. how will I adjust to sipping after the surgery? What happens if you accidentally gulp? Does it hurt bad?

I'm a gulper too... it's something I've had a hard time getting used to.  honestly for me, getting liquid "stuck" and the discomfort it causes me has made me more careful, but i'm a little over 3 months out and still forget when i'm very thirsty!  what will happen if you gulp will vary by person, i feel it stuck and it is very uncomfortable, it passes.

So I guess it will take me a few times to make myself learn what I can and cannot handle. As long as its just uncomfortable and doesn't cause sharp pains it doesn't seem all that bad.

I've always been a gulper, also.  This may sound silly, but when I find I take too big of a drink, I try to keep it in my cheeks/mouth and let it slowly slide through my teeth....lol.  Odd...but it works.  Hope this helps.

It is amazing how our pouches teach us lessons. You only disobey it once or twice before you totally comply with the silly little thing. Thats why most of us have a name for our pouch. ITS IN CONTROL LOL :)

Have you tried using a straw?  If I gulp down a drink, it will just come right back up.  It is not painful, but I'd rather keep it down lol.

I am a gulper too.  The differenc after surgery is I will fill my mouth with liquid, swallow, and then stop as my mouth fills again.  About 5 weeks after surgery I was able to drink faster again.  Using a straw does help with protein drinks.

As a former gulper I can tell you the change isn't that difficult after your first few gulps post op you will start to change.

I sometimes forget and gulp I'm 3 months post op but the funny thing is it didn't bother me at all.  Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.  It just seems ok with water, I can't gulp milk or protein drinks it seems to be colder and hits my stomach hard.  So funny how the surgery and how it effects people is so different.
