Question about expected postsurgery weight loss
I had my first required presurgery class today. They went over the surgeries offered and said the average weight loss for RNY is 30%. So, I did the calculations since I am at about 250 and that would mean realistically I would lose 75, down to 175. This was kind of discouraging to me as my goal weight is between 140-150; this would put me at a normal BMI. So is my goal unrealistic? I am also concerned because I will need a revision - Lap Band to RNY - and I have read that revision patients are slower losers. Don't get me wrong, 175 is a huge difference from 250, but I would still be considered overweight and am really hoping to get down to a "normal" weight.
So my question to you.......do you think it will be difficult or unrealistic to get down to 140-150? What percentage of weight loss did you achieve with the RNY?

Are you sure they said the average was only 30%? The stats I've seen say anywhere from 65% to 85% of your excess weight. So if you're 250 and your "ideal weight" is 150, your excess weight is 100 lbs, and you could expect to lose 65 to 85 lbs. However, that is just an average. Some people lose more than that. I lost more than 100% of my excess weight, ending up almost 20 lbs below goal.
Anyway, I think it is pretty realistic to hope to get down to a normal BMI. While revision patients do sometimes lose more slowly, that doesn't mean they are less likely to reach their goal.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
Who is the "she" who told you all this? A nurse, a dietician, a PA, a surgeon (please tell me it isnt the surgeon!)? I ask because not only is she way off on the percentage of expected weight loss with RNY, but apparently also cannot do simple math. If she is basing the 30% on overall weight, 10% of 300 pounds is 100 pounds, which would put the person in her example at 200 pounds not 210. If she is basing the 30% on excess weight, the numbers are ridiculous: if the loss is 90 pounds (300-210), and that loss is 30% of the excess weight, that means the person would have to have had over 270 pounds of excess weight (90x3, which is only 90% rather than 100%), which would mean that their non-excess weight was less than 30 pounds!
If this is your surgeon, I would get another surgeon.

14 years out; 190 pounds lost, 165 pound loss maintained
You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
I'm not a revision..but my HW was 280 SW was 267 I'm not quiet 8 months post op and I'm at 160..planning to get to 145. I feel like if I stick to logging my food..eatting correctly and exercising I shouldn't have an issue reaching 145..*maybe* even 140..I'm 5'6 so I'm not sure body wise where I want to end up at yet.
Great job!! From the research I have done on this surgery, if I'm correct, the surgery will make you lose a certain amount of weight regardless, but to get where you want to be and to stay that way takes hard work with right food choices and exercise. I guess it's all what you put into it! Keep up the great work! I'm almost 5'6 too and I remember being about 140 and feeling great, so if I could ever get there again, that would be AWESOME!
if her math were correct I'd be almost done losing. I started out at 244 lost about 10 pounds before surgery and at 2.5 moths out I'm at 185. I'm not even out of the honeymoon phase yet.
I have heard that revisions can lose slower but that is something you would want to ask your surgeon.
As you can see on my ticker my goal is 120. My doc's office won't even give me a goal.
Follow the plan eat right, exercise if you are able and you can obtain your goal. It may not be as quick as others and your journey may not be the same but your destination is up to you.

I am a revision from the band. I do lose slower than what I see posted but I am very happy with my almost 6 mos progress. I was never told 30% was the average. It was much higher. My goal is 160 but should I continue to lose for another yr it then I'll probably go under that.
