T2D, 3 days post-op - High Sugars???
My sugars since surgery have been anywhere from 140 - 170, I don't get it??? My protein shakes have less than 1 gram of sugar, nothing else I'm having has sugar. My doctor has me taking my R insulin on the low sliding scale (which is only 1 to 2 units). Pre surgery I would take about 20 -30 units if my sugar was that high to get me down to 90 - 100 range. I started taking more insulin because I think after 17 years of living with T2D I know how to control my sugar better than my surgeon. I'm not worried about getting back in range, as I know how to control it with my insulin, but why are my sugars high???

27 carbs today, of the 27 carbs 2 are from sugar.

Your body id eating the leftover energy your body has stored for so long. i am t2d also for 9 years, my surgery is in jan/13. you are in a state of ketosis, they will be high for a while. could be for up to 3 months, thats what i was told. Im in Canada, we go thru tonnes of appts before given a surgery date!

Until your body adjusts, your numbers are going to bounce everywhere before they get stable. I was told this by my surgeon and my PCP. It took months and I was taken off 3 diabetic meds right after surgery and kept on one of them scored in half. Metformin.as needed if I got above 150. Being on insulin I can't say what to do with that.
So don't worry too much. Just keep testing everyday. I would go for weeks with normal numbers then all of a sudden they would jump to 220, 240 from 119 and that's with keeping on the straight and narrow with my food intake, my protein shakes and water and vitamins. If I was any more rigid I would have been as stiff as a 4x8 piece of a plywood. If in doubt, call your doctor. Remember any info we give on here concerning medications is just info. Please only do what your doctor says. Take care, Jane
I've never had sugar issues in my life, but after surgery they were high and I needed insulin in the hospital, they told me it's not uncommon due to the stress of surgery, etc. I got mine though while I was still in recovery. go figure, I hadn't even eaten in like 12 hours.

Thanks to all that replied. I guess I just wait it out, I've been taking insulin for years, I guess a little while longer won't hurt! :)

You body stores a lot of sugar - every where. That will released as needed. Only long term low carb diet may deplete these storage.
The body can also make sugars from proteins. When I drink lean protein shakes without fat - my BS will rise - as if I ate carby food, then drops. My body will start using the proteins as fuel - to do that - it needs to convert that to sugar.
