I am chicken to try chicken (again)!

So even though I can eat pretty much any food now, my surgeon said he doesn't recommend eating chicken until 6 months out because he has found that that is the number one food cause of vomiting.  Of course, I had to try it because I was dying to try something different - and yup, I vomited.  That was about a month ago.  While I do believe that if chicken was available, my food choices would practically triple, I am a scaredy pants.

So, to make me feel better (or not), when did you start regularly eating chicken, which kinds (parts) were easiest on your pouches, and what, if any, advice do you have for when I start eating chicken in, oh, 3 more months?  (Thank you!)

I started eating canned chicken about 2 weeks after surgery. I tried some chicken breast about 1 month after surgery but I cooked it in a crock pot in some salsa and it kept it really moist. The first time I tried a plain grilled chicken breast on its own (about 3 months out) I felt a little discomfort but I didn't vomit. Since that experience I just make sure to bake it with some kind of sauce and I haven't had that problem since. I usually use a reduced calorie alfredo or some kind of marinara sauce or even just some kind of reduced calorie soup. Hope that helps. Good luck!

My first time eating chicken again, I cut a whole chicken in half and baked it in a covered pot with red and green peppers, and onions to help with seasonings, until it fell off the bone soft, and I ate it. Went down great no problems at all.

Huh... Last I heard, us California girls don't do chicken.  Hahahha.  I am over 10 months out and chicken can kiss my ass.   I can eat it in say a chicken enchilada if it's shredded up (like canned chicken)  but I have wondered why all the surgeons including mine say you can have chicken at 4 weeks.  UGH.  It really ruined me.  Now I can do steak, prime rib, roast beef those types of meat Oh and hamburger can kiss my other ass I lost.  Jane

Yay, it is not me!!  Thank you!  And you're right - we don't do chicken, we do sushi (or, in my case, sashimi).  Yum!  And you know, I thought my surgeon was being over cautious about chicken but maybe not so much.

Chicken breast was hard on me for the first few months, once I was allowed to try it. I stuck with dark meat and it was much easier! (And I found out my picky 5 yr old prefers chicken thighs - who knew?!). I bought boneless chicken thighs often - and made chicken drumsticks and removed the skin after cooking. We still eat those things. I call the 8 week mark my miracle week - all of a sudden, things were much easier from that point on and I rarely had issues after that with any chicken. Small bites, well chewed, moist meat. My fave now is chicken breast from the rotisserie chickens at the grocery store and Sam's Club. Maybe they taste better b/c I don't have to cook them? :)

I am now just about 12 weeks out and started on chicken at week seven...have it five to seven times a week...chicken salad...have to have a sauce if baked...most days it is fine but once in a while I can't eat more than a couple bites before I get that full feeling in my throat.  On those days, I only eat the few bites and have a snack later in the day to compensate...have not thrown it up yet...only time I did that was with undercooked pasta that I just had to have and have not had since!

I feel the most uncomfortable when I eat chicken.  However, on the rare occasion I do decide to eat chicken,  I make sure it is wet from something like light dressing or light sour cream (just a little so it slides).  Makes it a lot easier.

My plan was different I was allowed chicken at day 8. It was the first real food I are. Chicken legs were easy and moist. The white meat is dryer and was more difficult to eat. You could also try chicken salad that seems to be easier for many.

Eat a bite and chew well. See how it sits before proceeding.
