I have some experience in employment law including FMLA. I too would recommend that you consult a knowledgeable employment law attorney. While you may not be overly upset to leave this job, the settlement an attorney may be able to negotiate for you would certainly lessen the pain of no income during your job search. Also, a settlement typically would include removing all evidence of the firing from your employment record and an agreement to provide (at least) a neutral reference. Plus, it would give you the satisfaction of making this jerk suffer some consequences from his thoughtless (and quite possibly illegal) behavior. All the best to you, whatever you decide to do.
