Ultrasound results from my liver.

My doctor called me last night and let me know what the results were. She said they found some strange things, but the radiologist thinks it could be fatty liver. My doctor doesn't think that is possible, since my liver enzymes were actually quite low (16 AST and 17 ALT) not even a year ago. She doesn't think it would be possible for me to have developed a fatty liver in less than a year's time, especially when 6 months of that has been a high protein, low fat diet. The radiologist suspects fatty liver because there are random spots in my liver that have increased echogenicity, which can happen with fatty liver. They didn't see any explanation for the increased echogenicity, so they are assuming it's fatty for now. However, they want me to do an MRI, with and without contrast, to make sure there are no tumors or masses that would be causing this. The MRI should also be able to tell them if it is fatty liver or not. As I said, my doctor said she really doubts it is fatty liver, but is more concerned that it could be a biliary blockage somewhere in my liver. I don't have my gall bladder, so it is not that. The ultrasound also showed the my right kidney appears to be thinning out, so the MRI will hopefully shed some more light on that as well.

I am kind of freaked out and nervous. My doctor begged me not to look at anything on Google about this, as it will only scare me. She said she doesn't want me stressed or scared for the MRI, as that can make the whole experience worse. And as she put it, "there is no reason to be concerned until there is a reason for concern". So I will just wait it out and see what happens. I am waiting for the clinic to call me to set up my MRI appointment. It sucks because in a week and a half I have finals for school and my 3 year old son is having surgery. So that last thing I needed was my own health concerns.

My mother keeps blaming my RNY on this....I tried explaining that first, there is no for sure problem. They are trying to explain these things that are showing up on tests, and it could be a simple answer. And second, I don't think RNY has anything to do with liver disease or kidney thinning.....her response was, "well, what if they nicked your kidney or something?". WHAT!? Yes...they nicked my kidney and now it is thinning out 5 months later. Sheesh.....If anyone has any insight as to whether or not the RNY could have led to these issues, I would be appreciative. But like I said, it doesn't make sense to me....

No advice, I know nothing about what you are going through, but did not want to read and run. Hugs to you...and hopefully your mom will lighten up. Perhaps saying something like "Gee thanks, that is really helpful considering it is already done." and then give a very disapproving face to her.

I really have a feeling (call me Psychic Kim) that this is all going to turn out to be ok - I have seen so many ultrasounds of babies that are deemed "abnormal" that turn out to be perfectly normal, that I believe you are going to be relieved by the MRI!

I wholly agree with your doctor that you don't worry until you have something to worry about and yes, stay off GOOGLE!!!

Your doctor sounds quite sensible. And I agree--stay off Google. I don't know much about fatty liver issues, but it does seem unlikely it developed in the last six months.
I will swing a chicken that your finals go well, you son has a swift and speedy recovery, that there is a good outcome for your kidney/liver concerns, and that your mom cuts it out. My mom says that kind of thing too. Bleh.

Thanks ladies. You are amazing....I always laugh at the silly things that can be said. And yes, swing those chickens! Lol!

Just got the call. My MRI is scheduled July 2. It is a bummer I have to wait so long to get the much needed relief that Kim psychically knows I will get.

Until then, I have to keep busy with school, my kids, and the gym. And possibly uterine surgery. ******g uterus. Lol. I will find out tomorrow if surgery will happen. This week has been kind of nuts for me...can you tell?

There's nothing wrong with my uterus. Do you want it? I'm not using it.
