Tolerance Changes @ 2yrs out
I was 2 years post op as of 8/16. I have never dumped, I can eat a LOT of food, carbs have never bothered me. The last few weeks I have noticed some changes in my tolerance. I knew about Reactive Hypoglycemia, so I am careful with my sugar intake. But the last couple of weeks, apparently carbs are bothering me?
Example - it is a norm for me to have oatmeal (Bob's Red Mill - not instant) with peanut butter and sometimes a banana - but always the peanut butter for protein. Tuesday and today I had some for my pre-gym meal and both days I had RH symptoms. Tonight I had a thin crust slice of pizza and about 30 minutes later sweat drizzling down my back and dizzy as all get out.
Any other folks a little further out experience tolerance changes beyond just RH with sugar?
(those of you who may not know me - don't panic about my intake.... Dietitian is cool with everything I am doing because she knows my level of training / workouts ;) )
RH is frequently triggered by anything high in carbs, not just sugar. I've had it after eating crackers, popcorn, stuff like that. In fact, I never eat things real high in sugar because I do dump.

In a way I am quite ok with having consequences... because I haven't had them at all and I could tend to get a little crazy with my choices. It just totally caught me off guard that it would start so far out. And I guess I never considered "real" oatmeal a simple enough carb to cause the reaction. I obviously need to pay more attention about that stuff!
Today I got a glucose tolerence test. My 1 hour result was 320. My 2 hr result was 142 & my 2.5 hr crashed to 42! Things that never bothered me before are really messing with me. Good luck
Ugh... that does NOT sound like where I want to be!! One night I was driving home and felt the shakes / sweats coming on. I was close to my parent's house so I stopped in and used my mom's glucometer.... 47. I have an appointment with my dietitian in a couple of weeks, I guess I might need to ask her about this. :/
If I eat something like oatmeal without adding an adequate amount of Protein powder or if I wait too long between meals it knocks me on my butt. I try to eat every 2.5 -3 hours. I keep Glucerna tablets close by because I feel the room getting dark around me and know I don't have much time to get my sugar back up.
Yeah, I've had a few foods -esp higher fat or higher natural sugars - just randomly disagree with me, kinda like a mini-dump, seemingly out of nowhere. And then the next time I try them, I'm fine. But when I go much higher on carbs than I'm used to (like on vacation or eating a bagel), I get the worst gas EVER!! So that's aversion therapy for me (and anyone within 20 ft).
I hope your RD gives you some insight on how to balance training with BG issues, but what they advise us in long-distance running is upping fats 10 days before a race and upping carbs 3 days before - so, to space things out that slowly with protein accompanying your carbs & fats should allow you to not worry about bonking but also save you from the high/low swings.
