Eating in England on our Vacation

Well we did go to London area of England to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. We had a great time and I will not bore you with the details but you can read a little about it in my profile blog. Anyway I did my best to stay on program over there, but we were in a tour and most meals were provided by the tour company, so sometimes the selection was limited.

I did eat some things off my program just because I wanted to try them in a new country and environment. I don’t normally have as many carbohydrates as I did on the trip and I could not control what was added to the dishes we were eating but by all measures I was pretty successful. After 8 days of touring England and getting back I was only up 1.5 pounds from my low point of 161.5. Now that weight is well below my goal weight of 168 and I am trying to gain a little back so I was not at all upset with the gain. My wife gained about 4 pounds which she is losing now that we are back home. She is now a big fat 114 pounds. Really she is very thin anyway.

Got comments from other folks on the tour who had no idea of my past weight like: Gee no wonder you are so thin, you sure don’t eat much. And for someone of your age you look to be in great shape. Those comments made me feel great about my WLS. I was able to walk and enjoy the tour and vacation completely, Before my surgery I would have had to stay on the bus sometimes to recover, but this time I was right out there with the best of them.

The only negative thing about the tour is that English cooking for the most part sucks. I mean they have no idea about using spices and most everything was kind of bland. However we did have 3 great meals, but as my story on my profile blog tells, a good fish and chips dinner which we had planned for, cost me over $100.00 and I could only eat about 4 or 5 chips and about half the fish. But it was good.

Nest trip will be to Italy in 2 or 3 years.

England is a family favorite and London is a top 5 city for us, too! I have never done a tour, we've always just done our own thing, interesting about the food-I would not have considered the meals selected by others, so I appreciate the food for thought!

Italy is another family favorite, hope you enjoy that, too! I hope you have a wonderful 50th year!

Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!

That's great you had a wonderful time and only gained a little bit. I bet it was great to fly on a airplane and feel comfortable. I bet that was a great feeling. Also I am sure being able to stay with the tour and not stop because your weight held you back.Thank you for posting about your trip. I  have not had surgery yet and when I hear positive stories about travel it makes me feel so much better. There are so many places to see in the USA. , and in Europe and I can't wait to see them as a smaller person and healthy person.

I had to laugh about the English cooking comment.... I've never been to England, but Ireland many times. My last trip ( about 10 yrs ago) I made the mistake of buying jar sauce so I could make some spaghetti...... Oh.. My.... Lord :/  Absolutely TERRIBLE. I don't know WHAT the hell I was thinking !!

Sorry you were disappointed. You must not have eaten at the right places maybe a Little Chef or roadside cafes. My husband is English and all the times I have been there, I have never been disappointed. Home cooked meals are the best a Sunday roast dinner, lovely! If your meals were provided to you by the tour company that may for sure be a reason why they were not good.

Visit my blog as I travel this new developing road. :)

I loved the food in England. The English Fry up is my favorite. England is a DSers dream. I do not know much about the RNY diet. 1.5 pounds is not much so it sounds like you did okay =D

Hehehe, I wondered if you would say anything about the English food.  It has been so many years but I do remember the food was terrible, greasy, bland, just yuk for two weeks.  Except for the cheese we bought in Scotland and that was memorable.  Then we went to France and couldn't speak the language so we ate pizza in Italian restaurants and breakfast tarts from bakeries. The youth hostels were always good for spaghetti in Italy and that was the best ever.  Those were the days.....

Thanks for the memories.

You must have eaten in some crappy places if you think English food is bad.   I still go back every year and consider it a culinary adventure every time!!!

Glad you enjoyed it and happy 50th anniversary!~
